Senior Software Engineer – Fleet Enablement, Insights

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and take ownership of backend services and data pipelines that support map validation and simulation processes for Torc's autonomous trucking platform.

• Offer technical leadership for scalable web-based annotation tools, which include cuboid and polygon editing, cross-frame interpolation, track propagation, attribute editing, and review-first accept/reject workflows.

• Create robust data models and storage architectures across relational databases, spatial data, and large-scale object storage.

• Maintain data integrity, lineage, and performance from the point of ingestion through to delivery.

• Develop high-performance point cloud and image rendering utilizing three.js/WebGL, featuring octree/LOD-based streaming, predictive prefetching, camera-LiDAR projection, and multi-sensor overlays.

• Utilize AWS services such as S3, Lambda, ECS, and RDS to design and implement scalable, reliable pipelines and services.

• Lead technical design and architectural decisions across the domains of map validation and annotation platforms.

• Collaborate effectively with Mapping, Simulation, Annotation, and Perception teams.

• Mentor engineers through code reviews, design assessments, and collaborative coding sessions.

• Address technical debt, resolve performance bottlenecks, and enhance reliability, while also leading the response to production incidents.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of substantial experience in building and managing production backend services at scale.

• Proficiency in Python, backed by a history of designing and delivering production-quality services and tools.

• Strong SQL skills for querying, transforming, and analyzing both relational and analytical data.

• Experience in designing and creating web services and APIs that facilitate web-based tooling, with a solid understanding of TypeScript and modern web frameworks; depth in backend required, full-stack experience is a strong advantage.

• Familiarity with C++, or the capability to learn it quickly.

• Strong database and data modeling expertise, including hands-on experience with PostgreSQL or similar systems, and the ability to design schemas for integrity, lineage, and performance.

• Proven track record of owning system design and architecture for complex, multi-service or multi-pipeline systems.

• Proficient in using Git and GitHub for version control, branching strategies, and collaborative coding workflows.

• Familiar with JIRA or similar project management tools for tracking tasks, bugs, and sprint deliverables.

• Strong foundations in software engineering, including data structures, algorithms, distributed systems, and reliability engineering.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of leading technical discussions and collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

• Experience in designing data annotation, labeling, or data delivery platforms and the corresponding web tools.

• Knowledge of PostGIS for advanced spatial queries, geometry operations, and management of geospatial data.

• Experience handling large binary or sensor datasets (point clouds, imagery, video) and optimizing data-heavy user interfaces for enhanced performance.

• Familiarity with point cloud rendering and streaming formats (such as octree/LOD structures like Potree or COPC, 3D Tiles, LAS/LAZ) or large-scale spatial data structures.

• Experience with browser-based 3D graphics (three.js, WebGL, or similar), or a strong foundation in graphics with the ability to learn quickly.

• Previous experience with High-Definition (HD) maps, various map formats (e.g., OpenDRIVE, NDS, Lanelet2), or map production pipelines.

• Familiarity with robotics data and visualization ecosystems (e.g., Rerun, Foxglove, MCAP, ROS bags).

• Background in autonomous trucking or autonomous vehicles, with insights on how map and annotation data inform the AV stack.

• Contributions to open-source projects related to geospatial, data engineering, simulation, robotics, or annotation.
