This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more country.
• Develop and manage the control plane for extensive distributed SQL databases, including MySQL and TiDB.
• Automate the entire lifecycle of database provisioning, failover, backups, and upgrades.
• Design and implement reliability-driven schema and data migrations across multi-tenant database clusters without any downtime.
• Oversee the Kubernetes networking infrastructure that connects services to storage, particularly ProxySQL.
• Optimize networking for latency, resilience, and failover capabilities.
• Take responsibility for achieving quarterly team objectives.
• Guide engineers through complex, undefined challenges and facilitate successful delivery.
• Work collaboratively with product management, design, and analytics teams on brainstorming, technical constraints, risks, and trade-offs.
• Identify and spearhead solutions for project, process, technology, and business challenges.
• Establish and track metrics, escalate issues as necessary, and support on-call operations.
• Develop and refine code review and design standards.
• Advocate for engineering best practices through documentation and technical presentations.
• Foster team development by providing feedback, guidance, and leading by example.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience as a software engineer.
• Proven experience in designing, developing, and launching scalable backend systems using technologies such as Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, Terraform, and Kubernetes.
• Extensive hands-on experience with large-scale database implementations in a production environment.
• Proficiency in distributed databases and technologies like MySQL, TiDB, Postgres, Spanner, Vitess, and CockroachDB.
• Strong understanding of distributed database architecture, data modeling, and performance tuning.
• Expertise in SQL performance tuning and optimization.
• Experience with database benchmarking, load testing, and capacity planning.
• Familiarity with connection poolers and proxies such as ProxySQL, RDS Proxy, PgBouncer, and PgDog.
• Experience developing database control-plane automation tools, preferably on Kubernetes.
• Proven track record in executing zero-downtime migrations and major version upgrades on live databases.
• Experience creating CLI tools or runbooks for consistent database processes.
• Understanding of Kubernetes networking, service discovery, and TLS.
• Experience in defining technical plans for significant features or system components.
• Ability to produce high-quality, maintainable code.
• Proficient in making substantial changes within large codebases.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent practical experience.
