This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Develop and manage the control plane for large-scale distributed SQL databases, including MySQL and TiDB.
• Automate end-to-end processes for database provisioning, failover, backups, and upgrades.
• Design and implement schema and data migrations focused on reliability across multi-tenant database clusters without downtime.
• Take ownership of and enhance the Kubernetes networking stack that connects services to storage, including ProxySQL.
• Set and achieve quarterly goals for the team.
• Guide engineers through complex, ambiguous challenges while supporting project delivery.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics teams on ideation, technical constraints, risks, and trade-offs.
• Identify and lead the resolution of issues related to projects, processes, technology, and business operations.
• Create and track operational metrics, escalate issues as necessary, and assist in on-call duties.
• Establish and enhance code review and design standards.
• Promote quality standards through technical writing and presentations.
• Foster team talent via feedback, guidance, and leading by example.
• Over 5 years of experience as a software engineer.
• Proven experience in designing, developing, and deploying backend systems at scale using technologies such as Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, Terraform, and Kubernetes.
• Extensive hands-on experience with large-scale database deployments in production environments.
• Deep expertise in distributed databases and database technologies, including MySQL, TiDB, Postgres, Spanner, Vitess, and CockroachDB.
• Strong understanding of distributed database architecture, data modeling, and performance tuning.
• Proficient in SQL tuning and performance optimization techniques.
• Experience with database benchmarking, load testing, and capacity planning.
• Familiarity with connection poolers and proxies such as ProxySQL, RDS Proxy, PgBouncer, and PgDog.
• Experience in building database control-plane or automation tools, preferably on Kubernetes.
• Proven track record of executing zero-downtime migrations and significant version upgrades on production databases.
• Skilled in creating CLI tools or runbooks for repeatable database operations.
• Understanding of Kubernetes networking, service discovery, and TLS.
• Experience in defining technical plans for major features or system components.
• Ability to produce high-quality, comprehensible code.
• Proficient in making substantial changes within large codebases.
• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
• Either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
