This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Missouri.
• Develop technical solutions that enhance The RealReal’s on-platform experiences to attract and engage high-value customers.
• Create backend services and internal web applications to ensure consignors' items are listed, enriched, and merchandised accurately and efficiently.
• Design, build, and deploy services and tools for item creation, enrichment, configuration, listing, and merchandising workflows.
• Write high-quality, performant, secure, and testable code.
• Work across various technologies including JVM (Java, Kotlin), Elixir, Ruby, React, TypeScript, GraphQL, Kafka, AWS/Lambda, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and related tools.
• Take ownership of medium-to-large features or services from start to finish.
• Influence the architecture, standards, and delivery of team-owned systems.
• Review pull requests, offer constructive feedback, collaborate with teammates, and assist with onboarding.
• Responsibly deploy user-facing and operator-facing code to production environments.
• Collaborate with product management, engineering leadership, and stakeholders to clarify uncertainties and balance customer needs with technical limitations.
• Enhance reliability and maintainability through metrics, incidents, and observability.
• Engage in ongoing learning and contribute to initiatives that drive the company forward.
• 3-5+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Excellent communication skills with product teams, stakeholders, and engineering colleagues; capable of clarifying ambiguous requirements.
• Proven experience in building production-ready web applications and backend systems with a focus on reliability and security.
• A strong enthusiasm for testing practices and continuous improvement; dedicated to observability-minded delivery.
• Experience in influencing the technical direction (architecture, standards, delivery), beyond merely executing predefined tasks.
• Familiarity with programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, Elixir, Erlang, Ruby, JavaScript, Next.js, or others; prepared to work on JVM services (Java, Kotlin) as needed.
• Knowledge of IDEs, RESTful APIs, Git repositories, TypeScript, version control systems, and remote deployment tools.
• Understanding of event-based architectures, event streaming technologies like Kafka, database fundamentals, and GraphQL or similar APIs.
• Comfortable working with complex, contextual domain data and integrating with adjacent services.
• Knowledge of reusable components and building component libraries, particularly in UI-focused roles.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
• Preferred: Experience in production with JVM services and/or web applications using JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and React.
• Preferred: Experience integrating LLMs or managed AI APIs into backend or internal tooling.
• Preferred: Experience in building microservices integrated with neighboring teams or shared platforms.
• Preferred: Experience in developing eCommerce or marketplace platforms.
• Preferred: Experience with dashboards, monitoring, or incident management in production environments.
• Preferred: Experience with Python in production backend roles alongside JVM or service-oriented architectures.
