Senior Software Engineer, Applied AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop and enhance capabilities supported by LLM on AWS Bedrock and associated models.

• Implement document OCR and extraction processes for clinical and claims documentation.

• Create summarization and decision-support tools for clinical evaluations.

• Construct Knowledge Bases for retrieval of plan and policy documents.

• Automate workflows for internal teams.

• Establish and uphold evaluations for deployed AI functionalities and track quality changes.

• Address production AI issues, including structured outputs, failure modes, costs, latency, and deterministic alternatives.

• Utilize Claude Code and Kiro as primary coding tools and verify their outputs.

• Design, build, test, and deploy features in the Python and FastAPI backend with MySQL and AWS.

• Develop front-end functionalities using Jinja2, Tailwind, and Alpine.js.

• Rectify any malfunctioning features prior to adding new functionalities.

• Collaborate with integrations to exchange eligibility, accumulator, and claims data with carriers and pharmacies.

• Support NCPDP D.0 and X12 270/271 transactions along with relevant file formats.

• Identify missing test and lint gates, treating CI as an integral part of the definition of done.

• Prioritize PHI management as a key design constraint.

• Write precise specifications, prompts, and design documentation.

• Initially work with clinical teams, then expand to other business areas as the platform matures.

• Report directly to the Head of Engineering and collaborate with business owners.

• Engage in HR, technical, leadership, and business interviews, including practical exercises and on-site visits.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of experience in building production software, with genuine ownership of systems relied upon by others.

• Proficient in Python with experience in production FastAPI or a similar async framework.

• Strong SQL skills with MySQL or Postgres.

• Familiarity with AWS.

• Comfortable with server-rendered front end utilizing Jinja2, Tailwind, Alpine.js, or htmx.

• Proficient in Linux for development and able to work from a Windows workstation through remote desktop in a secure environment.

• Daily use of AI coding tools in practical work settings.

• Experience shipping at least one LLM-powered feature to real users, including evaluation experience.

• Practical understanding of prompt and context engineering, retrieval, embeddings, and structured outputs.

• Knowledge of healthcare data exchange standards and file-based integrations, including NCPDP D.0, X12 270/271, SFTP, fixed-width and delimited formats, and reconciliation.

• Direct communication style with the ability to clearly articulate trade-offs and seek clarification when needed.

• Experience in healthcare or other regulated data environments, including familiarity with HIPAA, PHI, or SOC 2, is a plus.

• Background in pharmacy benefits, claims, or clinical programs is advantageous.

• Experience self-hosting open-source models with vLLM, Ollama, or TGI, including GPU sizing, quantization, and private-network deployment, is a plus.

• Experience with fine-tuning or adapter training on domain-specific data is beneficial.

• Knowledge of classical ML for prediction or scoring using scikit-learn or XGBoost, along with production model monitoring, is a plus.

• A Master's degree in computer science or a related field is advantageous.
