Senior Ruby on Rails Developer, IoT Integrations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Take full responsibility for the architecture of Rails applications and APIs that support connected device fleets.

• Design and oversee IoT communication layers utilizing MQTT, WebSockets, CoAP, or HTTP-based protocols.

• Architect solutions for high-volume telemetry ingestion, queuing, and real-time processing pipelines.

• Make informed build-versus-buy decisions regarding IoT platforms, message brokers, and data stores, and advocate for these choices to clients.

• Create schemas and develop scaling strategies for time-series and event-heavy workloads.

• Integrate cloud IoT services such as AWS IoT Core or Azure IoT Hub, including device provisioning, certificate management, and over-the-air update workflows.

• Conduct code reviews, establish engineering standards, and mentor mid-level and senior developers.

• Facilitate technical discovery sessions with clients and firmware or hardware teams, translating findings into scoped delivery plans.

• Troubleshoot production issues across device, network, and application layers.

⛳️ Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a minimum of 6 years of hands-on experience in Ruby on Rails.

• Demonstrated success in shipping and scaling IoT integrations in a production environment.

• Extensive experience with MQTT or similar device messaging protocols at scale.

• Strong skills in API design, including versioning, contracts, and ensuring long-term maintainability.

• Proficient in PostgreSQL or MySQL at scale, with real experience in query and index optimization.

• Knowledge of Redis, Sidekiq, and distributed background job architecture.

• Strong testing discipline using RSpec or Minitest.

• Experience with Docker, CI/CD, and taking ownership of production deployment.

• Proven experience leading a team or managing delivery on multiple concurrent projects.

• Good to have: familiarity with time-series databases such as InfluxDB or TimescaleDB.

• Good to have: experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ, or other similar event streaming platforms.

• Good to have: exposure to edge gateways, embedded systems, or collaboration on firmware.

• Good to have: working knowledge of Python, Go, or Node.js for device-side tooling.

• Good to have: experience with infrastructure as code and cloud cost optimization on AWS or Azure.

• Good to have: prior experience in an agency or consulting role with client-facing technical ownership.
