Senior Project Accountant

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +3 more states.

📋 Description

• Oversee accounting and financial aspects for designated construction projects, covering revenue, costs, work-in-progress (WIP), commitments, billing prerequisites, and financial reporting.

• Act as the main accounting contact for Project Managers and project teams regarding intricate accounting, billing, cost, revenue, and compliance issues.

• Evaluate project outcomes, pinpoint financial risks or unusual patterns, and facilitate the resolution or escalation of complex challenges.

• Assess project financial information, contracts, change orders, transactions, and relevant documentation.

• Execute intricate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing activities, including journal entries, accruals, reclassifications, reconciliations, and WIP analysis.

• Examine balance sheet and income statement accounts, investigate discrepancies, and resolve any unusual or intricate transactions.

• Assist with tax accruals and ensure the accuracy of project accounting data within financial reporting systems.

• Review owner billing requirements and ensure precise, timely preparation of billings and associated documentation.

• Collaborate with Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Procurement, and project teams on billing, payment, collections, and subcontractor compliance matters.

• Supervise project documentation, including lien waivers, preliminary notices, insurance, and contractual compliance items.

• Act as a subject matter expert for requests from internal and external auditors.

• Coordinate the preparation, review, documentation, and resolution of audit support.

• Work alongside auditors and internal stakeholders on complex inquiries and ensure timely completion.

• Identify control deficiencies and suggest enhancements.

• Propel process improvement, standardization, automation, and control enhancement initiatives.

• Create procedures, templates, checklists, and documentation.

• Offer escalation support, training, mentoring, onboarding, and functional guidance to Project Accountants.

• Review intricate or technical work and provide constructive feedback.

• Foster relationships with Project Managers, Operations, Procurement, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Tax, Financial Reporting, and other business partners.

• Convey complex financial information to both accounting and non-accounting stakeholders.

• Maintain responsiveness, accountability, and ownership for time-sensitive projects.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.

• Minimum of 6 years of relevant accounting experience.

• At least 2 years of experience with a Big Four or Top 10 audit firm or equivalent experience supporting complex public-company audits, SOX compliance, or technical accounting issues.

• Strong grasp of U.S. GAAP, journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, financial reporting, and internal controls.

• Experience with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes, including complex journal entries, reconciliations, and audit support.

• Proven track record in driving process improvement, standardization, or automation initiatives.

• Experience acting as a subject matter resource, escalation point, mentor, and reviewer.

• Excellent cross-functional communication skills.

• Familiarity with ERP and integrated accounting systems; experience with CMiC is preferred.

• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, and financial analysis.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making abilities.

• CPA, CMA, or CCIFP designation preferred.

• Preference for candidates in Pacific or Central time zones.

• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring employer sponsorship, now or in the future.

• Ability to meet specified physical demands, including lifting 20 or more pounds.
