Senior PHP, WordPress Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Mexico, +4 more countries.

📋 Description

• Design and construct robust backend systems utilizing modern PHP 8.x, strict typing, object-oriented design, and Composer.

• Create custom WordPress plugins, hooks, filters, custom post types, and REST APIs.

• Implement WordPress security measures and caching strategies.

• Develop custom Gutenberg blocks and dynamic editorial interfaces using React and the @wordpress/* package ecosystem.

• Architect scalable application structures, domain logic, service boundaries, and data models.

• Support migrations from legacy Laravel systems to WordPress.

• Write and maintain unit and integration tests utilizing PHPUnit and Jest.

• Engage daily with AI agents such as Claude Code by crafting prompts, providing context, and reviewing and testing generated code prior to deployment.

• Collaborate with engineering teams on international client projects and take part in ceremonies, stand-ups, and collaborative sessions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive expertise in PHP 8.x, covering strict typing, enums, readonly properties, match expressions, exceptions, namespaces, and object-oriented API design.

• Demonstrated experience with WordPress, including WP_Query, REST API, multisite, WP-CLI, caching, security practices, custom taxonomies, and metadata.

• Strong capability in building dynamic/server-rendered Gutenberg blocks.

• Proficiency in React, asynchronous JavaScript, ES modules, and webpack-based environments.

• Experience with domain logic, dependency injection, maintainable data models, and scalable application architecture.

• Practical experience with PHPUnit, Jest, data providers, and the Arrange / Act / Assert testing pattern.

• In-depth knowledge of HTTP, SQL, browser/server behavior, input sanitization, output escaping, prepared queries, and authentication.

• Familiarity with Docker-based local environments, CLI tooling, advanced Git workflows, rebasing, conflict resolution, pull requests, and code reviews.

• Hands-on experience using AI coding assistants and critically assessing, testing, and guiding generated output.

• Consistent overlap with Central Time (CT) and standard Austin business hours.

• Proficiency in English for interviews, documentation, and daily communication.

• Nice-to-have: Experience with WordPress VIP, edge cache, VIP Search / Elasticsearch, vip-cli, schema.org / JSON-LD, sitemaps, Core Web Vitals optimization, TypeScript, Playwright, large-scale content migrations, Laravel, Symfony, or another modern PHP framework.
