Senior Manager, Software Engineering – Experiences

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Oversee Tonal's Experiences team that focuses on enhancing member satisfaction and implementing incremental improvements and new features for current subscribers.

• Directly manage a team of six engineers.

• Establish the team's direction, conduct performance evaluations, provide coaching, and deliver timely feedback.

• Take ownership of the member experience roadmap in collaboration with Product, Design, Data Science, and Content teams.

• Ensure reliable delivery and high-quality releases.

• Promote technical excellence in areas such as reliability, performance, test coverage, and release health.

• Balance investments in technical debt with the pace of shipping new features.

• Collaborate with other teams to gain prompt feedback and minimize coordination challenges.

• Recruit and develop the team.

• Establish clear expectations for different levels, conduct equitable and calibrated hiring processes, and cultivate a pool of engineers capable of leading.

• Thoroughly assess design documents and risky modifications, understanding the engineering trade-offs involved.

⛳️ Requirements

• Several years of direct management experience with software engineers, including hiring, performance evaluation, and fostering technical growth.

• Proven experience in shipping consumer-facing product experiences on mobile platforms, embedded devices, or web applications.

• Strong engineering foundation with expertise in at least one specialized area.

• Proficient in reading and reasoning about code and architectural designs.

• Effective communication skills with Product, Design, Data Science, and executive teams.

• Capable of having direct, respectful discussions with underperforming team members.

• Familiarity with AI-assisted engineering tools and the ability to evaluate their outputs.

• Experience with Android, Kotlin, Flutter, Swift, or software developed alongside physical products is a plus.

• Experience in leading platform or release-process modernization efforts is an added advantage.

• Background in connected fitness, consumer hardware, or digital health is a bonus.

• Experience managing distributed or contract engineers is a plus.
