Senior Manager, Quality Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.

📋 Description

• Lead and cultivate a team comprising engineering managers, software engineers, and quality engineers.

• Define the vision, strategy, and multi-year roadmap for quality engineering and unified testing platforms.

• Develop scalable, self-service testing infrastructure, which includes frameworks, environments, test data, simulators, and CI/CD integrations.

• Establish quantifiable quality metrics such as escaped-regression rates, automated coverage, test reliability, time to signal, defect-detection effectiveness, and release confidence.

• Promote a shift-left quality strategy throughout architecture, development, code review, and continuous delivery processes.

• Collaborate with product engineering teams to pinpoint high-risk customer journeys and address coverage gaps.

• Minimize flaky tests, accelerate feedback loops, and enhance failure diagnosis.

• Equip Quality Engineering individual contributors with tools for exploratory testing, end-to-end validation, release qualification, and regression analysis.

• Implement AI-assisted features for test generation, failure classification, root-cause analysis, coverage identification, and quality insights.

• Recruit, mentor, and develop inclusive, high-performing teams.

• Advocate for and integrate Samsara’s cultural principles as the organization expands globally.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of relevant experience in software engineering, developer infrastructure, test engineering, or quality engineering.

• More than 5 years of experience in engineering leadership roles.

• Proven experience in managing other managers and leading teams that include managers and senior individual contributors.

• A history of building and scaling shared test infrastructure, automation frameworks, developer platforms, or quality systems utilized by multiple engineering teams.

• Extensive knowledge of testing strategies across unit, integration, contract, end-to-end, performance, reliability, mobile, web, API, and distributed backend systems.

• Proven success in using metrics and engineering practices to decrease escaped regressions and enhance release confidence.

• Strong technical expertise, including guidance on architecture, technical design reviews, implementation-quality assessments, and build-versus-buy decisions.

• Experience in creating CI/CD quality gates.

• Familiarity with exploratory and manual testing methodologies.

• Experience in promoting the adoption of horizontal platforms via APIs, documentation, enablement, and partnership with stakeholders.

• Capability to influence engineering and product leaders and spearhead complex cross-organizational initiatives.

• Experience managing quality systems for large-scale cloud, mobile, IoT, hardware-integrated, or distributed products.

• Excellent communication, organizational leadership, and talent development capabilities.

• Direct experience with Golang, AWS, and Terraform is not mandatory.
