
Senior Manager – Audit, Utility User Tax

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Manage audit operations for Utility User Tax to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and timely completion.
• Interpret and apply tax regulations and laws to complex auditing scenarios.
• Act as the final authority on audit conclusions and issues related to tax law application.
• Review and endorse audit findings, reports, and related recommendations.
• Develop, implement, and oversee the annual audit budget.
• Track expenses, financial performance, KPIs, workflow, staffing, and overall productivity.
• Analyze and enhance efficiency and resource distribution.
• Recruit, train, mentor, and assess audit personnel.
• Make recommendations and decisions regarding hiring, promotions, and terminations.
• Coordinate legal representation for audits that are disputed in court.
• Collaborate with legal counsel on facts, documentation, and audit positions.
• Maintain client relationships through effective communication, site visits, and professional consultation.
• Ensure adherence to policies, procedures, and relevant laws.
• Identify and enact process improvements.
• Provide strategic leadership and direction.
• Travel as necessary.
• Carry out other assigned responsibilities.
• Operate in an office environment utilizing a telephone and computer.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
• 5-12 years of relevant experience in utility user tax.
• Extensive knowledge of state and local tax regulations, laws, statutes, and procedures.
• Proficient understanding and experience in corporate accounting, direct and indirect transactional taxes, and additional business accounting operations.
• Capacity to analyze tax-sensitive general ledger accounts.
• Intermediate to advanced tax research abilities.
• Familiarity with accounting principles and strong analytical capabilities.
• Competence in organizing, planning, and directing tasks.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with personnel across all company levels.
• Strong knowledge of accounting systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Capacity to remain stationary for most of the workday.
• Ability to operate a computer and office productivity machinery continuously.
• CPA or CIA certification is preferred but not mandatory.
• Knowledge or experience in state and local taxes is preferred.
