This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Spearhead the global tax strategy for the group across its international framework and operations.
• Act as the primary tax advisor to executive leadership on critical tax and strategic issues.
• Direct intricate international and cross-border tax planning while creating tax-efficient corporate frameworks.
• Provide guidance on foreign affiliates, surplus planning, repatriation, cross-border distributions, tax treaties, withholding taxes, permanent establishment, residency, central management and control, and other cross-border factors.
• Manage the transfer pricing strategy and oversee policies, methodologies, intercompany agreements, documentation, and execution.
• Conduct tax analysis of intercompany financing, service arrangements, intellectual property arrangements, distributions, and other cross-border transactions.
• Establish and enhance tax governance, internal controls, documentation standards, and tax risk management procedures.
• Supervise direct and indirect tax compliance and reporting across relevant jurisdictions.
• Identify tax planning opportunities, structural enhancements, and significant tax risks.
• Lead tax audits, disputes, controversy issues, and interactions with tax authorities.
• Direct and coordinate external accounting firms, tax advisors, legal counsel, and specialists across various jurisdictions.
• Collaborate with finance, legal, accounting, and executive leadership to integrate tax considerations into major business and financial decisions while providing clear recommendations.
• Over 12 years of progressively advanced experience in Canadian and international tax, including considerable experience in a Big Four or other prestigious accounting firm.
• Senior leadership experience in international tax, typically at a Senior Director level or higher within a leading accounting firm, or equivalent responsibilities in a complex multinational organization.
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage highly intricate international tax issues and oversee tax strategy.
• Extensive expertise in Canadian international tax and the application of Canadian tax principles to complex multinational structures.
• Significant experience with foreign affiliates, surplus planning, tax treaties, withholding taxes, permanent establishment, residency, and cross-border tax issues.
• Strong background in multinational structures, international tax planning, intercompany arrangements, financing, distributions, and cross-border transactions.
• In-depth knowledge of transfer pricing strategy, policies, documentation, and execution.
• Strong understanding of tax governance, tax risk management, and oversight of international tax compliance.
• Considerable experience advising CFOs, founders, senior executives, boards, business owners, or other senior decision-makers regarding significant tax matters.
• Experience managing and challenging external tax advisors, accounting firms, legal counsel, and other specialists.
• Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance tax efficiency, technical defensibility, compliance, operational practicality, and business goals.
• Capacity to operate with a high level of independence, judgment, and accountability.
• Exceptional analytical, written, communication, and negotiation abilities.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Law, or a related field.
• CPA designation is highly preferred; equivalent senior professional tax qualifications may also be considered.
• Advanced Canadian tax education or professional training is strongly preferred, such as the CPA In-Depth Tax Program, an LL.M. or Master’s degree in Taxation, or comparable advanced tax credentials.
• Experience with complex multinational structures involving Hong Kong or other major international operating jurisdictions would be especially relevant.
• Previous in-house experience within a complex multinational group is advantageous, but not mandatory.
• Exposure to high-growth and highly international businesses would be particularly pertinent.
• Experience with technology, SaaS, software, digital businesses, or other organizations driven by intellectual property would be especially relevant.
