Senior Manager, Accounting

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take the lead on essential aspects of the monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes, ensuring timeliness, precision, and well-documented judgments and variances.

• Manage revenue recognition according to US GAAP, which includes reviewing and approving monthly entries, reconciliations, and supporting analyses.

• Produce accurate periodic reports, such as balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and management reports.

• Uphold the integrity of the general ledger by establishing and enforcing suitable coding structures, review processes, and documentation standards.

• Act as a key decision-maker regarding accounting treatment, estimates, and operational judgments, escalating complex issues to the Controller when necessary.

• Ensure that expenditures adhere to donor requirements, regulatory standards, and internal policies; serve as a vital point of interpretation for both finance and non-finance teams.

• Document and revise financial policies and procedures within our knowledge management system.

• Review and authorize reconciliations and journal entries, ensuring that issues are identified, investigated, and resolved in a timely manner.

• Enhance accounting system workflow through improvements.

• Collaborate across functions (finance, treasury, payments, operations) to ensure accounting implications are understood and integrated into processes.

• Identify opportunities for enhancements and maintain comprehensive documentation.

• Oversee the annual financial statement audit and the Single Audit.

• Assist in the preparation of consolidated financial statements.

• Supervise the preparation and submission of regulatory filings, particularly form 990.

• Ensure continuous compliance with US GAAP, FASB guidance, and internal control requirements; proactively identify and rectify gaps.

• Serve as a primary liaison between auditors and internal teams, ensuring prompt, accurate responses and minimal disruption.

• Where applicable, manage and support accounting staff by reviewing their work, providing feedback, and enhancing team capabilities.

• Participate in cross-functional initiatives and organizational projects, representing accounting perspectives and requirements.

• Carry out any additional duties assigned by the Controller and stakeholders as needed.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

• Over 7 years of professional experience in accounting or finance, with substantial expertise in data analysis and reporting.

• A professional qualification (ACCA or CPA) is preferred.

• Proficient in English at a professional level.

• Strong understanding of US GAAP, with the capability to independently research, interpret, and apply guidance to real-world situations.

• Experience in multi-country/multi-entity accounting, including intercompany transactions, consolidations, and navigating varying local regulatory and reporting requirements, ideally within an international nonprofit or development organization.

• Background in audit environments and managing external auditors.

• Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals at all levels and across various cultures, demonstrating credibility, tact, and diplomacy.

• Strong stakeholder management skills, with a talent for explaining accounting concepts to non-finance audiences.

• Proactive and logical approach to problem-solving scenarios.

• Excellent time management skills, with the ability to plan ahead, anticipate needs and challenges, manage competing priorities successfully, and meet tight deadlines.

• Maintain a calm demeanor and positive outlook, especially when under pressure.

• Appreciate the importance of cooperation, both internationally and within a team environment.

• Willingness to learn new software tools such as Slack and Sage Intacct.

• Advanced skills in spreadsheets.

• Strong aptitude for numbers and quantitative analysis.
