This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Define and spearhead innovative research initiatives for foundational models utilizing longitudinal wearable and physiological data.
• Transform open-ended inquiries into testable hypotheses, create novel modeling techniques, and establish datasets and experimental frameworks.
• Develop rigorous evaluation strategies that differentiate significant model capabilities from results influenced by leakage, confounding factors, or unstable benchmarks.
• Propel advancements in representation learning, forecasting, personalization, multimodal modeling, and generative modeling across extensive longitudinal datasets.
• Transition model capabilities from research findings to prototypes, validation, and implemented health solutions for Ōura members.
• Disseminate scientifically significant breakthroughs through publication as appropriate, while ensuring product relevance.
• Collaborate with scientists, clinicians, engineers, and product stakeholders, while effectively navigating through ambiguity in independent work.
• 5+ years of pertinent machine learning research and practical experience, including expertise gained during doctoral studies.
• PhD or MSc in machine learning, computer science, statistics, electrical engineering, or a comparable quantitative discipline.
• Outstanding research acumen and a proven history of pinpointing crucial questions, formulating original hypotheses, and designing experiments that yield credible evidence.
• Profound technical knowledge in contemporary foundational models, representation learning, large-scale training, and model assessment.
• Proven ability to independently navigate ambiguous research challenges from concept to functional system and clear scientific outcomes.
• Strong foundation in probability, statistics, experimental design, and rigorous evaluation, including understanding confounding factors, leakage, and generalization.
• Advanced skills in Python and modern machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch or JAX.
• Capacity to construct data, training, and evaluation systems.
• Robust record of first-author, peer-reviewed publications in top-tier machine learning, time-series, digital health, or related fields.
• Effective communication skills, intellectual integrity, and a collaborative mindset.
• Preferred: experience with longitudinal time-series, wearable sensors, physiological signals, real-world health data, multimodal learning, generative modeling, forecasting, personalization, efficient or on-device models, ML systems, clinical research, causal inference, and converting research advancements into prototypes or production capabilities.
