Senior Java Software Engineer – Backend

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Turkey.

📋 Description

• Contribute to the development of Mercury’s next-generation shipment platform through designing, documenting, coding, maintaining, refactoring, fixing, testing, and enhancing backend software.

• Design and create a scalable, secure, maintainable, and thoroughly documented API platform.

• Collaborate with DevOps engineers to design and evaluate build pipelines along with deployment tools and scripts.

• Create and/or code event data collection, notifications, and filters to enhance observability.

• Establish microservices and APIs in partnership with architects and front-end developers.

• Work alongside QA to define the backend testing strategy, toolset, and best practices.

• Enhance implementation practices, technology stack, standards, and third-party tools across production teams.

• Partner with the Boston Product Team to shape product requirements and the roadmap.

• Ensure that technical needs are fulfilled while maintaining a strong emphasis on usability.

• Conduct developer research with client developers and the internal team.

• Advocate for Mercury’s customers during product development.

• Simplify complex problems into clear, elegant solutions.

• Create a distinctive experience for the Mercury shipping platform that aligns with brand values.

• Report to the Software Engineering Manager and collaborate as part of a cross-functional agile team involving Engineering, Product, and QA.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proficient in English.

• Bachelor’s degree in a software-focused engineering discipline such as Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, or Computer Science and Engineering.

• Over 7 years of experience in backend development using Java, with at least 4 years utilizing version 9 or higher.

• Strong foundation in core Java principles.

• At least 3 years of recent experience with Spring Boot / Spring.

• Proficient in Spring Data, Hibernate, and JPA.

• Experience in unit testing and test-driven development.

• Familiarity with code reviews (both as a reviewer and developer) and a willingness to engage in this process.

• Knowledgeable in Git and distributed version control systems.

• Understanding of RESTful API design and implementation.

• Familiarity with backend architectural design concepts.

• Proven experience with microservices architecture.

• Experience with Kafka for messaging and streaming.

• Understanding of database technologies, particularly PostgreSQL.

• Strong grasp of fundamental development technologies such as OAuth, REST, JWT.

• Comprehension of OOP principles along with solid algorithms and problem-solving capabilities.

• Experience in building large-scale backends with supporting developer portals/marketplaces.

• Good understanding of lean/agile values, principles, and associated practices.

• Familiarity with Linux operating system shell commands and scripting.

• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.

• Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability.

• Mentor and guide junior engineers, encouraging a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.

• Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and within a team.

• Ability to prioritize customer needs and deliver results in a timely manner.
