Senior Engineering Manager – Commerce

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Lead the development of HighLevel's Payments Platform.

• Take charge of execution, reliability, and the evolution of checkout, subscriptions, payment orchestration, invoicing, ledger, and financial reconciliation capabilities.

• Build, mentor, and grow a high-performing backend engineering team.

• Oversee hiring, onboarding, performance management, career development, and succession planning.

• Manage the execution of the Payments Platform roadmap and ensure predictable delivery across multiple ongoing initiatives.

• Balance business priorities with platform investments, reduction of technical debt, and improvements in reliability.

• Coordinate dependencies across teams and identify risks, blockers, and execution gaps.

• Lead sprint planning, roadmap planning, estimation, prioritization, and delivery reviews.

• Collaborate with Product, Finance, Compliance, Customer Success, Marketing, Infrastructure, and Security teams.

• Communicate tradeoffs, delivery timelines, risks, and technical decisions to executive stakeholders.

• Direct a highly available, planet-scale payment infrastructure and reliability practices.

• Foster SLO ownership, error budgets, incident management, disaster recovery, capacity planning, and operational readiness reviews.

• Collaborate with Staff and Principal Engineers on architecture and technical direction.

• Guide decisions related to Domain-Driven Design, API governance, event-driven systems, service boundaries, and data consistency models.

• Establish standards for API design, code quality, testing, CI/CD, documentation, and operational readiness.

• Advocate for design reviews, RFCs, ADRs, postmortems, continuous improvement, automated testing, observability, and deployment tooling.

⛳️ Requirements

• 12+ years of experience in developing scalable backend distributed systems.

• 5+ years of experience working with Go.

• 5+ years of experience managing software engineering teams that deliver large-scale backend platforms.

• Demonstrated experience leading teams accountable for business-critical distributed systems with high availability and reliability demands.

• Experience collaborating with Product Managers and cross-functional stakeholders to define roadmaps, manage priorities, and deliver customer-facing capabilities.

• Strong history of hiring, coaching, mentoring, and developing engineering talent.

• In-depth understanding of distributed systems, including event-driven architectures, asynchronous messaging, consistency models, idempotency, concurrency control, and resilience patterns.

• Familiarity with Kubernetes/GKE, GCP services such as Pub/Sub, Redis, MongoDB/Firestore, and ClickHouse.

• Experience with CI/CD and cloud-native infrastructure.

• Comprehensive understanding of API lifecycle management, including protobuf, ConnectRPC/gRPC, versioning strategies, and contract testing.

• Experience with SLIs/SLOs, observability, incident management, disaster recovery, and capacity planning.

• Knowledge of PCI, secrets management, data governance, and privacy controls.

• Excellent communication skills, with experience presenting technical strategies, delivery updates, and architectural decisions to senior stakeholders and executives.
