Senior Engineering Manager, AI Foundations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Oversee the engineering of AI Foundations across shared AI services.

• Recruit and mentor the engineering team.

• Establish technical direction, set priorities, and outline delivery expectations.

• Collaborate with Product and senior engineers to innovate AI models and agents.

• Maintain a balance between reliability, security, developer experience, and cost.

• Manage vendor relationships from the engineering perspective and ensure operational readiness.

• Work alongside Security, Legal, and Finance teams on AI governance and expenditure controls.

• Lead the strategy for the “Neutral Foundations” pillar and outline the roadmap for 2027.

• Promote operational excellence in AI primitives and services.

• Implement the LLM Gateway and MCP Gateway while enhancing model routing and evaluations.

• Cultivate the next generation of leadership in AI Foundations.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in leading AI Foundations engineering, including hiring, coaching, establishing technical direction, prioritizing, and delivering across shared AI services.

• Capability to balance innovation in models and agents with reliability, security, developer experience, and cost considerations.

• Experience managing engineering-side vendor relationships and ensuring operational readiness.

• Ability to collaborate with Security, Legal, and Finance on AI governance and managing expenditure controls.

• Skill in defining a strategy and roadmap for the “Neutral Foundations” pillar of Coinbase’s AI Tooling Strategy for 2027.

• Proven ability to drive operational excellence in AI primitives and services.

• Experience in delivering the LLM Gateway and MCP Gateway, with a focus on advancing model routing and evaluations.

• Ability to foster the development of the next tier of leadership in AI Foundations.
