Senior Engineer – Database

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Zealand, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Collaborate with database engineers and product development teams to ensure the durability, quality, and performance of Xero's core database platform.

• Utilize technical due diligence and contemporary AI tools to enhance daily operations across the SQL Server fleet.

• Proactively oversee database risks, changes, and releases.

• Plan and carry out comprehensive migrations from SQL Server to Aurora Postgres RDS.

• Incorporate AI tools into engineering workflows for query analysis, risk detection, and proactive maintenance.

• Advise product development teams on schema design, query optimization, and database observability using AWS tools.

• Offer strategic insights regarding query performance and database architecture.

• Assist product teams in constructing sustainable, scalable infrastructure for millions of users.

• Engage with senior database engineers and internal product squads through daily standups and technical collaboration.

⛳️ Requirements

• Profound knowledge of SQL Server and SQL Server RDS, with a strong focus on query analysis and performance optimization.

• Practical experience or familiarity with Aurora Postgres RDS.

• Eagerness to participate in ongoing database migration initiatives.

• Practical mindset towards technical ownership.

• Ability to identify risks early and implement effective, sustainable solutions.

• Strong communication skills to convey database complexities to product teams and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration.

• Curiosity and willingness to leverage AI tools.
