
Senior Energy Engineer – RCx-Systems Optimization

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Kentucky, +1 more state.
• Take charge of retro-commissioning (RCx) and optimization projects for commercial and industrial clients, overseeing the process from initial engagement to implementation support, verification, and final reporting.
• Execute thorough site investigations and facility walkthroughs to assess building systems, equipment condition, operational practices, control strategies, and energy efficiency opportunities.
• Evaluate HVAC systems, building automation systems, control sequences, schedules, setpoints, reset strategies, equipment sequencing, economizer operation, and various operating conditions.
• Analyze BAS trend data, interval meter data, utility consumption, equipment operating data, drawings, sequences of operation, and other relevant information.
• Create RCx measures, engineering analyses, calculations for energy and demand savings, implementation cost estimates, payback, and cost-effectiveness evaluations.
• Compile RCx studies and technical reports that detail facility conditions, methodologies, savings calculations, recommendations, implementation requirements, and projected benefits.
• Collaborate with facility managers, operators, maintenance staff, contractors, customers, and other stakeholders to validate findings and assist in implementation.
• Aid customers and contractors in interpreting recommendations, troubleshooting technical issues, refining control strategies, and confirming implementation.
• Conduct or assist with measurement and verification activities using pre- and post-implementation data.
• Oversee project management including scheduling, data collection, tracking open items, documentation, milestones, and deliverables.
• Facilitate customer outreach and project development efforts, identifying suitable facilities.
• Work closely with outreach staff and program team members to convert prospective customers into active projects.
• Manage a portfolio of approximately 20 concurrent RCx projects.
• Exercise independent engineering judgment and engage in peer reviews.
• Communicate technical findings, project status, challenges, and next steps to customers, utility representatives, internal teams, and stakeholders.
• Recognize implementation challenges and devise practical solutions.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of RCx methodologies, calculation tools, report templates, technical resources, and program processes.
• Perform regular fieldwork in the Evansville, Indiana area with an estimated 25–50% travel requirement.
• Carry out other assigned duties.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related engineering or technical discipline.
• Over 7 years of relevant professional experience in energy efficiency, retro-commissioning (RCx), commissioning, building controls, energy engineering, or building systems optimization.
• Strong technical expertise in commercial and industrial HVAC systems and their associated controls.
• Proven experience in independently conducting retro-commissioning, commissioning, energy studies, or similar building optimization projects.
• In-depth knowledge of building automation systems (BAS), control sequences, and building operating strategies.
• Demonstrated capability to identify, develop, and assess energy conservation measures (ECMs).
• Experience in analyzing BAS trend data, interval meter data, utility data, and equipment operating data.
• Skill in conducting detailed facility walkthroughs and field investigations.
• Experience in preparing comprehensive, high-quality technical studies and engineering reports.
• Ability to interact effectively with facility staff, customers, contractors, and other stakeholders.
• Comfortable supporting customer outreach and project development initiatives.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and independently drive them from initiation through to completion.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, technical writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Willingness and ability to conduct regular fieldwork in the Evansville, Indiana area and travel approximately 25–50% of the time.
• Interest in sustainability and a passion for making a significant impact on the environment.
• Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a thorough background check and reference check.
• A pre-employment drug screening may be required if applicable.
• Preferred: Professional Engineer (P.E.) license, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP), Building Commissioning Professional Certification (BCxP), or a similar credential.
• Preferred: Master’s degree in a related technical field.
• Preferred: Experience with M&V methodologies, utility-sponsored energy efficiency programs, HVAC/BAS control strategies, control sequences, additional industrial systems, customer outreach, professional engineering studies, ASHRAE standards, IECC, and industry best practices.
