Senior Electrical Substation Design Project Engineering Manager

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.

📋 Description

• Oversee and manage the complete range of HV/EHV AC power substation design projects.

• Lead interdisciplinary technical project teams and contractors.

• Collaborate with vendors, professional clients, project managers, engineering teams, and subcontracted resources.

• Execute detailed substation design tasks and conduct quality reviews.

• Offer technical guidance and coordinate with the Project Manager regarding timelines and budgetary constraints.

• Manage scheduling, adherence to standards and specifications, value engineering, design review planning, and quality assurance and control.

• Create and supervise power single-line diagrams.

• Produce general substation arrangement drawings, which include layouts, elevations, grounding, conduit/trench, cable routing, detail drawings, and control building layouts.

• Develop high-voltage bus, structures, equipment, and detailed configurations.

• Act as the primary point of contact for all technical issues.

• Guide and assist engineers and designers to fulfill specifications, budgets, and timelines.

• Facilitate cross-discipline collaboration for cohesive substation solutions.

• Review and contribute to conceptual engineering and proposal documentation, such as BOMs and technical specifications.

• Aid in sourcing, vendor quotation assessment, and technical clarifications and assumptions.

• Lead the creation of high-voltage equipment specifications and contractor work scopes.

• Support vendor engagement and selection of equipment.

• Manage subcontracted design work scopes as required.

• Assist the manager in enhancing team productivity and billable utilization.

• Ensure engineering outputs align with customer CTQs and are delivered punctually and within budget.

• Facilitate commissioning and manage interactions between customers and project stakeholders.

• Provide integrated project solutions for large-scale electrification.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.

• At least 12 years of experience in industrial or utility High Voltage substation design (≥138kV).

• Willingness to travel up to 20%, including internationally.

• Legally authorized to work in the United States.

• Prepared to complete a drug screening, if necessary.

• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the U.S. in good standing, with the ability to obtain licensure in additional states.

• Familiarity with EHV substation design standards.

• Proficient in transmission and distribution substation engineering for utility and renewable energy initiatives.

• Experience with primary outdoor substation design, calculations, and electrical protection.

• Knowledge in industrial power system design at 12.5 kV and above.

• Expertise in battery sizing, DC system design, and AC auxiliary power calculations.

• Experience in selecting power transformers and circuit breakers.

• Conductor sizing and application expertise.

• Understanding of grounding, lightning protection, and insulation coordination.

• Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC standards.

• Experience in field-testing and commissioning.

• Strong skills in electrical and mechanical troubleshooting.

• Excellent customer-facing communication and commercial awareness, including change orders and project delivery.

• Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, and design automation tools.
