This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado.
• Compile, edit, and verify expedition reports
• Collaborate with volunteer climber-writers and the Editor-in-Chief to refine longer articles
• Conduct research for the American Alpine Journal, Cutting Edge podcast, and other AAJ platforms
• Gather and prepare photographs and captions for publication
• Upload and modify online articles
• Execute additional tasks assigned by the AAJ Editor-in-Chief
• Support the AAJ Editor-in-Chief in planning, editing, and producing the 2027 edition, the AAJ website, the e-newsletter The Line, and various other channels
• Comprehensive climbing experience and expertise, particularly in alpinism and mountaineering
• Dedication to the AAC mission and the ability to embody its core values
• Profound understanding and passion for climbing history
• Proven history of reporting and editing climbing news or similar specialized journalism
• Demonstrated capability to edit longer-form articles for publication
• Experience in planning and layout for print publications in collaboration with an art director
• Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities, with a knack for prioritizing tasks and handling multiple project deadlines simultaneously
• A collaborative spirit and capacity to thrive in a team setting while being receptive to feedback and constructive criticism
• Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively within a team and across departments, with external contractors, and climbers, including individuals with limited English proficiency
• Familiarity and comfort working within deadlines
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and InDesign, G Suite, and Slack
• Contract may be renewed upon successful completion, with the possibility of an expanded role and increased compensation
