This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take ownership of and enhance the information architecture of the portal, which includes navigation, site maps, page hierarchy, labeling, taxonomy, and user flows.
• Spearhead information architecture initiatives for high-traffic pages, features, and cross-portal projects.
• Assess the potential impact of information architecture modifications on the overall user experience.
• Collaborate with external teams to ensure the portal's information architecture aligns with enterprise standards and associated digital experiences.
• Plan and execute user research activities, including usability testing, tree testing, card sorting, and generative research.
• Integrate qualitative and quantitative data, such as user research, analytics, feedback surveys, and other pertinent inputs.
• Develop and uphold site maps, user flows, wireframes, concepts, and prototypes.
• Convert complex user, content, and business requirements into straightforward, intuitive experiences.
• Communicate research results, design rationale, and suggestions to government stakeholders and product teams.
• Include users with disabilities in research efforts and apply Section 508 and WCAG accessibility standards.
• Contribute to design work within an established design system, from initial concepts to high-fidelity prototypes.
• Foster collaborative relationships across design, product, engineering, program leadership, government stakeholders, and external teams.
• Maneuver through ambiguity, shifting requirements, and intricate stakeholder environments.
• Identify design, research, and delivery risks, proactively communicate them, and suggest mitigations.
• Coach and mentor team members through constructive feedback, knowledge sharing, and design collaboration.
• Assist in hiring processes by reviewing candidate exercises and participating in panel interviews.
• A Bachelor's degree coupled with 7+ years of relevant professional experience.
• Additional relevant experience may substitute for formal education.
• Proven experience in conducting and applying user research within digital products or services.
• Experience in planning, conducting, and synthesizing both qualitative and quantitative research.
• At least 2 years of focus on information architecture or equivalent responsibilities, demonstrated by a portfolio showcasing work such as site maps, navigation structures, user flows, taxonomy, and wireframes.
• Experience in designing for large, complex, or content-rich websites, applications, or digital portals.
• Familiarity with working within an established design system.
• Strong capability to translate research findings, analytics, user needs, and complex requirements into actionable design recommendations.
• Experience presenting work to senior clients or stakeholders and articulating the rationale behind design decisions.
• Experience in mentoring or providing design guidance to other team members.
• Proficiency with contemporary design and collaboration tools such as Figma, Miro, or similar platforms.
• Understanding of accessible and inclusive design practices.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
• Preferred: experience supporting federal government digital services or modernization initiatives.
• Preferred: experience in designing healthcare, benefits, patient-facing, or other complex service-oriented digital experiences.
• Preferred: experience with large-scale portals, content ecosystems, or intricate navigation structures.
• Preferred: familiarity with information architecture research methods and tools, including tree testing and card sorting.
• Preferred: experience incorporating web analytics or other quantitative data into UX and information architecture decisions.
• Preferred: knowledge of Section 508 and WCAG accessibility standards.
• Preferred: experience conducting research within government review, approval, recruitment, or participant-management processes.
