Senior Design Technician – Electric Distribution

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Connecticut, +7 more states.

📋 Description

• Conduct on-site visits to gather data regarding utility poles and electrical systems.

• Create designs for overhead and underground electric distribution networks.

• Develop construction drawings, material lists, and necessary documentation.

• Execute calculations for pole loading, voltage drop, easement validation, permitting, and cost estimation.

• Perform pole analysis modeling and conduct GIS assessments.

• Generate materials lists and prepare or revise design prints.

• Assist with pre-construction tasks and address design and site-related inquiries.

• Examine client records, GIS data, and field information to detect discrepancies and ensure accuracy.

• Mentor junior technicians in data collection, drafting, and adherence to utility design standards.

• Oversee multiple projects while fulfilling quality, scheduling, and client satisfaction requirements.

• Implement company safety protocols, client guidelines, and regulatory standards, including RUS, NESC, and permitting.

• Collaborate with engineers, designers, and construction teams during site reviews and coordination meetings.

• Work autonomously while upholding effective communication and documentation practices.

⛳️ Requirements

• 2–5 years of experience in a design technician, engineering technician, or utility design capacity.

• Fundamental experience in utility distribution network design, including overhead/underground layouts and pole line design.

• Proficient with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or comparable drafting/design software.

• Capability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and utility standards.

• Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.

• Experience in client-facing roles and excellent communication skills.

• Willingness to travel for field assignments as required.

• Preferred experience in gas and/or electric distribution design.

• Familiarity with DDS design software tools is a plus.

• Knowledge of GIS systems such as SmallWorld or Bentley Utility Designer is preferred.

• An associate degree or higher technical degree in a relevant field is preferred.

• Prior experience mentoring junior technicians is advantageous.

• Strong attention to detail, quality, and adherence to safety practices.

• Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering.
