Senior Design Engineer – GM Design System

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Create and sustain a scalable design system developed in Stencil and distributed as framework-agnostic Web Components.

• Enhance the system for React and Angular users through framework wrappers and integration support.

• Produce semantic, accessible HTML that adheres to WCAG and WAI-ARIA best practices.

• Execute keyboard navigation, focus management, and support for screen readers.

• Guarantee uniform behavior across various browsers, devices, and assistive technologies.

• Develop modular, maintainable CSS suitable for large-scale applications.

• Construct flexible, reusable, high-performance, accessible, and self-documenting components.

• Convert Figma designs into production-ready code in partnership with designers.

• Contribute to the documentation of the design system, coding standards, and best practices.

• Integrate components into CI/CD pipelines and facilitate unit, visual regression, and accessibility testing.

• Investigate and incorporate AI capabilities into design system workflows.

• Assist in component generation, design token mapping, and automated documentation.

• Publish components, tokens, and usage guidelines in machine-readable formats, using Storybook as the foundation.

⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in a technical or design-related discipline, or equivalent work experience.

• Over 5 years of professional experience as a Design Engineer or Design Technologist.

• Proven experience in building or contributing to design systems or UI libraries.

• Strong proficiency in modern HTML, advanced CSS architecture, vanilla JavaScript, and TypeScript.

• Understanding of front-end architecture and techniques for scaling CSS in enterprise settings.

• Familiarity with semantic HTML, WCAG, and ARIA accessibility standards.

• Experience in progressive enhancement and performance optimization.

• Knowledge of design tokens, Style Dictionary, or similar tools.

• Practical experience or active experimentation with AI-enabled design systems, LLM context generation, or AI-driven UI workflows.

• Preferred: experience in building Web Components.

• Preferred: experience with React, Angular, or other contemporary JavaScript frameworks.

• Preferred: experience with Stencil.

• Preferred: familiarity with testing frameworks such as Jest or Playwright and visual regression tools.

• Preferred: background in web design, design tools, or extensive collaboration with design teams.
