This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Oversee the entire patent portfolio, which includes invention harvesting, filing strategy, prosecution management, and lifecycle decisions regarding continuations, abandonments, and annuities.
• Collaborate with scientists and engineers to identify patentable innovations at an early stage.
• Manage invention disclosures and reviews, establishing a streamlined end-to-end process with inventors.
• Direct and hold external patent firms and foreign associates accountable for quality, cost, and timely delivery.
• Conduct freedom-to-operate and clearance analyses to guide product strategy and launches.
• Act as the intellectual property representative in commercial, collaboration, and corporate transactions.
• Develop and maintain the broader intellectual property program, which encompasses trade secrets and trademark clearance, prosecution, and enforcement.
• Collaborate across functions to devise legal strategies that promote growth while minimizing risk.
• Contribute to building a forward-thinking, business-oriented, dynamic legal team as an early legal hire.
• Juris Doctor (J.D.) or an equivalent law degree, with admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• A minimum of 7 years of substantial experience in intellectual property law, with significant depth and expertise in patent law.
• Strong technical fluency and the capability to engage with PhD-level physicists, chemists, machine learning researchers, and other technical specialists.
• Ability to excel in fast-paced, high-growth environments where intelligent, rapid decision-making is crucial.
• Proficiency in building relationships across diverse teams and translating complex legal concepts into actionable business strategies.
• A mix of in-house and Big Law experience is highly preferred.
• USPTO registration / patent bar admission is preferred.
• Experience with AI/ML, life sciences, or computational chemistry topics, including Section 101 eligibility strategies for software and algorithmic inventions.
• Experience or interest in developing an IP program from an early stage.
• Experience with government-funded contracts, trade secret program design, litigation or contested proceedings (IPR, PGR, oppositions), and the use of or interest in AI tools to expedite legal work are highly valued.
