This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
β’ Take full ownership of Nex's privacy program from start to finish, covering COPPA compliance, product data mapping driven by AI and camera technology, vendor data processing agreements, and processes for consent/disclosure.
β’ Create, evaluate, and uphold privacy policies, terms of service, and parental consent processes for new markets.
β’ Provide counsel to Product, Engineering, Trust & Safety, Design, and Marketing teams on privacy-by-design principles, age-appropriate user experiences, and legal risks throughout the product lifecycle.
β’ Keep track of developments in children's privacy, online safety, consumer protection, and AI regulations, translating these into actionable product guidance.
β’ Manage privacy incidents, regulatory inquiries, and requests from data subjects or parents, escalating issues to the General Counsel and external counsel as needed.
β’ Review materials related to subscriptions, in-product offerings, promotions, sweepstakes, user experiences, advertising, and marketing.
β’ Advise on responsible development and deployment of AI technologies, particularly in computer vision and motion detection.
β’ Highlight any physical product safety and liability concerns to the General Counsel and external counsel.
β’ Contribute to IP strategy through invention harvesting, patent strategy, and trademark guidance.
β’ Develop playbooks, guides, training materials, scalable launch-review processes, intake triage systems, and templates.
β’ Collaborate with Legal Operations and Commercial Counsel on product-related legal requests and agreements.
β’ Oversee external counsel on specialized matters involving privacy, AI regulations, product safety, or intellectual property.
β’ Assist in defining and enhancing Nex's product legal function.
β’ J.D. degree with active bar membership in good standing (California or another applicable U.S. state).
β’ 4-7+ years of relevant legal experience, encompassing both law firm and in-house product counseling within a technology or consumer products environment.
β’ Extensive, practical knowledge of children's privacy compliance (COPPA, age-appropriate design frameworks, GDPR-K, or similar regulations).
β’ Proven experience advising product, engineering, and design teams throughout the entire product development lifecycle.
β’ Familiarity with consumer protection laws as they relate to subscriptions, promotions, and marketing claims.
β’ Ability to provide guidance on emerging regulatory issues concerning AI and computer vision.
β’ Experience in creating playbooks, review processes, and governance frameworks from the ground up.
β’ Exceptional judgment in interpreting complex legal and regulatory requirements into straightforward, actionable guidance.
