This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Kansas, +6 more states.
• Analyze and summarize inpatient medical records.
• Accurately identify and assign diagnosis, procedure, and service codes for inpatient documentation.
• Gather and integrate data elements necessary for federal or state reporting and billing purposes.
• Assess documentation for relevant diagnoses and procedures following ICD-10 coding standards.
• Ensure the precision of diagnoses and procedures to facilitate appropriate reimbursement.
• Consult with physicians when documentation is insufficient, ambiguous, unclear, or when coding assignments are complex.
• Stay updated with coding and reimbursement reporting guidelines and raise any issues to management.
• Assign ICD-10 codes and DRGs to inpatient records.
• Achieve and maintain an accuracy rate of 92% to 95% in ICD-10 and DRG assignments while meeting productivity benchmarks.
• Reduce the occurrence of abstracting errors.
• Comply with AHIMA's Standards of Ethical Coding and official coding guidelines.
• Follow Memorial Hermann's policies, procedures, safety standards, productivity, and quality expectations.
• Fulfill mandatory education and skills competency requirements.
• Contribute to department objectives and act as a preceptor, mentor, and resource for less experienced team members.
• Undertake additional duties as required.
• High School Diploma or GED is mandatory.
• An Associate's degree in Health Information Management or a related healthcare field is preferred.
• Required certification: RHIT, RHIA, CCA, CCS, or CIC from AHIMA or AAPC.
• A minimum of five (5) years of inpatient hospital coding experience is essential.
• Experience in coding at a level 1 trauma center or academic teaching facility is highly preferred.
• Strong oral and written communication abilities.
• In-depth knowledge of ICD-10-CM and PCS coding.
• Analytical abilities to interpret health record data and assign suitable codes.
• Comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and surgical terminology.
• Critical thinking capabilities, sound judgment, and effective decision-making skills.
• Familiarity with coding compliance policies, official coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal coding procedures.
• Proficient in navigating a Windows-based application environment.
• Must reside in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, or North Carolina, or be willing to relocate to an eligible state.
