Senior Backend Engineer, Ruby on Rails

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and sustain scalable backend applications utilizing Ruby on Rails

• Work closely with Product Managers and engineering stakeholders to evaluate requirements and convert product specifications into technical solutions

• Create technical integration plans, development breakdowns, and precise effort estimates

• Implement new features and consistently enhance the functionality of existing applications

• Produce clean, efficient, maintainable, and well-tested production code

• Engage in pull requests, peer code reviews, and software testing

• Diagnose application issues and enhance performance, reliability, and scalability

• Participate in architectural discussions, technical decision-making, and product roadmap planning

• Manage complex backend features throughout the development lifecycle, from initial requirements to production deployment

• Identify and address technical bottlenecks as user demand increases

• Investigate new technologies, frameworks, and development methodologies

• Collaborate with distributed engineering, infrastructure, SRE, and product teams

• Contribute to the continuous enhancement of development processes, code quality, and system architecture

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 5 years of commercial experience as a Backend or Full-Stack Software Engineer

• Strong, recent hands-on experience in developing and maintaining production applications using Ruby on Rails

• Proven capability to independently design, develop, and implement complex backend features

• Experience working on applications with thousands or more monthly active users

• In-depth understanding of scalable backend architecture, application performance, and system reliability

• Demonstrated experience in delivering features throughout the entire software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, implementation, testing, and production deployment

• Experience in technology startups, scale-ups, or similarly fast-paced, agile engineering environments

• Ability to adapt to shifting priorities, manage deadlines, and uphold high engineering standards

• Strong grasp of software engineering principles, clean code practices, and automated testing

• Experience in participating in code reviews and collaborating with cross-functional development teams

• Excellent analytical thinking, troubleshooting skills, and a proactive approach to technical problem-solving

• Capability to work independently, take ownership of technical deliverables, and contribute to engineering decisions

• Exceptional written and spoken English communication skills

• Experience collaborating effectively with international, fully remote teams

• Must reside in Europe and be available to work within a CET ±3 hours time overlap
