This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +1 more state.
• Work collaboratively with product teams and fellow engineers to define requirements, grasp user needs, and decompose intricate projects into manageable iterations.
• Develop and implement backend and real-time functionalities within the GitLab monolith, including GraphQL and RESTful APIs and subscriptions, prioritizing performance, reliability, and user experience.
• Enhance and advance portfolio planning features, encompassing work item hierarchy, status rollup, and capacity planning.
• Optimize PostgreSQL performance at scale through strategies such as query and write optimization, indexing, denormalization, partitioning, and migrating suitable workloads to Elasticsearch or ClickHouse.
• Generate proofs of concept for complex tasks, uphold extensive automated test coverage, and facilitate secure rollouts using feature flags and robust observability.
• Guide engineers and open source contributors via code reviews, collaborative coding, consistent feedback, addressing contributor issues, and participating in hackathons.
• Engage in on-call rotations, resolve production issues, assist in root cause analysis, and enhance the team's development and review methodologies.
• Proven experience advocating for the user perspective while navigating trade-offs with product managers, engineers, and users.
• Demonstrated leadership on projects involving multiple engineers over several months, providing support through thoughtful code reviews, feedback, hiring, career development, and mentoring.
• Full stack development experience with a current emphasis on backend technologies.
• Expertise in Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
• Familiarity with the workings of complex modern frontends.
• Strong PostgreSQL expertise with a track record of enhancing database performance at scale through query and write optimization, indexing, denormalization, and partitioning.
• Experience in designing and evolving GraphQL and/or RESTful APIs with a focus on scalability, backward compatibility, and clear agreements with frontend clients.
• Background in improving extensive automated test suites, including enhancing the performance and reliability of the tests themselves.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills suited for an asynchronous, distributed environment.
• Experience incorporating artificial intelligence into development workflows.
• Experience in creating AI-powered features or working with Elasticsearch, ClickHouse, or Python is an advantage.
