Senior Backend Engineer – Payments

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom, +7 more countries.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and maintain integrations with banks and payment partners across SEPA, Faster Payments, SWIFT, and various other payment schemes.

• Take ownership of the reliability and accuracy of both inbound and outbound payment processes, including reconciliation, settlement, and exception management.

• Create systems that are resilient to partner outages, network failures, and edge cases in financial messaging.

• Enhance system observability, fault tolerance, and operational excellence across payment infrastructures.

• Collaborate with compliance, finance operations, product, and engineering teams to advance payment capabilities.

• Engage in code reviews and post-mortem analyses.

• Provide mentorship to other engineers.

• Tackle technical debt and guide the resolution of technical challenges and migrations.

• Report directly to the Engineering Manager for Bank Infrastructure.

• Lead initiatives related to bank integration or payment operations from design to production.

⛳️ Requirements

• Practical experience in building payment integrations, bank APIs, payment scheme integrations, or financial messaging formats such as ISO 20022, SWIFT, SEPA, or Faster Payments.

• Strong knowledge of end-to-end payment processes, encompassing initiation, routing, reconciliation, settlement, and exception/failure management.

• Experience in designing and operating highly available, resilient distributed systems with effective error recovery and observability.

• Proficiency in server-side development, preferably in Kotlin or Java.

• Significant experience with microservices and distributed systems.

• Skilled in PostgreSQL, AWS, Kubernetes, and observability tools such as Grafana.

• Familiarity with payment compliance and regulatory considerations such as AML, sanctions screening, and PSD2 is advantageous.

• Understanding of safeguarding customer funds and money movement processes.

• Experience managing production payment systems amid incidents and operational complexities.

• High proficiency with AI-enhanced development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude.

• Capability to structure complex engineering challenges for AI collaboration, draft precise specifications, validate generated outputs, and iterate effectively.

• Willingness to enhance AI fluency.

• Ability to mentor and elevate the skills of teammates.
