Senior Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Egypt, +4 more countries.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and maintain backend systems that support AI-driven products and workflows.

• Create integrations and connectors enabling AI agents to engage with both internal and external services.

• Construct and uphold Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools, servers, and integrations.

• Develop scalable REST APIs and backend services for automated language model workflows.

• Design dependable integrations among AI models, internal systems, and third-party services.

• Work with both relational and non-relational databases.

• Establish and maintain asynchronous workflows utilizing background jobs and queue systems like Redis Queue and SQS.

• Collaborate with product and technical stakeholders regarding requirements and architecture.

• Contribute to architectural decisions involving backend services, integrations, and distributed systems.

• Engage in code reviews and promote best practices in engineering.

• Document technical decisions, requirements, tickets, and implementation details using Linear.

• Ensure production reliability through troubleshooting, monitoring, logging, observability, and incident response.

• Support cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, containers, orchestration, and infrastructure-as-code practices.

• Operate independently within a distributed remote engineering environment.

• Communicate progress, technical decisions, risks, and blockers effectively.

• Convert product and business requirements into technical solutions.

• Take ownership of technical work from requirement gathering through production delivery and ongoing support.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 6 years of professional backend engineering experience in production settings.

• Significant experience in designing, building, and maintaining backend services.

• Strong preference for experience with PHP.

• Proficient in designing and integrating REST APIs.

• Familiarity with microservices architectures and distributed systems.

• Experience with both relational and non-relational databases.

• Knowledge of background jobs, queues, and asynchronous processing systems.

• Ability to work independently on production-critical systems with limited oversight.

• Experience in an early-stage startup environment or as a founder/co-founder of a venture.

• Skilled at navigating environments characterized by ambiguity, changing priorities, and limited resources.

• Strong fundamentals in backend software engineering and system design.

• Comprehensive understanding of REST APIs, service integrations, and distributed systems.

• Hands-on experience with AI development skills, MCP servers, or related technologies in real-world projects.

• Interest or experience in integrating LLMs and AI models into production systems.

• Familiarity with Model Context Protocol (MCP) and AI-agent integration patterns.

• Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills in production environments.

• Ability to clearly document technical requirements, tickets, and architectural decisions.

• Capacity to work autonomously and take responsibility for technical outcomes.

• Excellent asynchronous collaboration skills in distributed engineering teams.

• Availability to work from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM EST, including a 1-hour lunch break.
