Senior Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Egypt, +4 more countries.

📋 Description

• Take full ownership of backend features from inception to deployment, including requirements gathering and schema modifications, through to development and ongoing production monitoring.

• Develop and sustain backend capabilities within a well-established PHP/Laravel application.

• Create reliable and scalable solutions tailored for a high-volume, multi-tenant SaaS environment.

• Recognize recurring technical challenges and propose enhancements to architecture, reliability, and performance.

• Construct and maintain integrations with third-party platforms and services.

• Develop webhook receivers, polling jobs, and parsers for ingesting and normalizing external data.

• Design resilient integrations capable of managing inconsistent, unreliable, duplicated, delayed, and out-of-order vendor data.

• Develop and utilize REST APIs while supporting high-volume transactional messaging and customer feedback workflows.

• Design and oversee asynchronous and queue-based workflows utilizing technologies like AWS SQS.

• Implement strategies for retries, idempotency, duplicate handling, timeouts, and failure management.

• Manage dead-letter queues and troubleshoot issues related to failed background processing.

• Design and maintain relational database schemas suitable for high-volume production workloads.

• Formulate indexing strategies, optimize queries, utilize EXPLAIN, and address database performance challenges.

• Work with MySQL/AWS Aurora and MongoDB/DocumentDB across extensive production datasets.

• Investigate complex production and data issues across MySQL, MongoDB, S3 archives, CloudWatch logs, Sentry, and additional resources.

• Diagnose failures through logs, traces, monitoring platforms, and database analysis.

• Identify root causes and continually monitor deployed features for reliability.

• Write automated tests and assess suitable coverage based on behavior, risk, and business requirements.

• Review code from engineers and provide technical feedback.

• Engage in Git and pull-request-based workflows.

• Utilize Docker-based development environments.

• Leverage AI coding assistants during production development while reviewing, validating, debugging, and enhancing generated code and tests.

• Maintain comprehensive understanding and ownership of all production code deployed.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of professional backend development experience.

• More than 3 years of hands-on experience with PHP and a modern PHP framework; Laravel is strongly preferred, with Symfony also considered.

• Proven experience in developing and maintaining production backend systems.

• Experience in building and consuming REST APIs and integrating third-party services.

• Familiarity with queues, background jobs, retries, failures, duplicate delivery, and timeouts.

• Experience in building systems that manage inconsistent or unreliable third-party data.

• Proficient in Git and pull-request-based development workflows.

• Experienced in using Docker for local development.

• Experience utilizing AI coding assistants for real production software.

• Deep knowledge of modern PHP 8.x, object-oriented programming, and software design principles.

• Strong expertise in Laravel.

• Excellent relational database skills, including schema design, indexing, query optimization, EXPLAIN analysis, and diagnosing performance issues.

• Strong understanding of asynchronous processing and dependable queue-based systems.

• Ability to design resilient third-party integrations that accommodate retries, idempotency, duplicate delivery, failures, and inconsistent data.

• Proficient debugging abilities in production across databases, logs, monitoring systems, and external integrations.

• Strong judgment in automated testing.

• Comfortable working with AWS infrastructure, specifically SQS, Lambda, ECS, S3, CloudWatch, and RDS/Aurora.

• Familiarity with MongoDB or DocumentDB is highly preferred.

• Ability to work effectively within multi-tenant SaaS architectures, including tenant isolation and white-label environments.

• Comfortable managing high-volume transactional systems, webhook ingestion, SMS, email, or similar messaging workflows.

• Strong written communication skills for tickets, pull requests, technical documentation, and production investigation reports.

• Experienced in AI-assisted development while maintaining independent technical judgment.

• Must be available to work from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST, aligned with the client’s time zone.

• An English-language resume is required; English proficiency will be assessed during the application process.
