Senior Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable, secure, observable, and maintainable production services and APIs.

• Lead significant or ambiguous backend projects from the initial problem definition to delivery and subsequent iterations.

• Assess and communicate trade-offs related to scalability, performance, reliability, security, maintainability, cost, and delivery speed.

• Identify architectural risks, performance bottlenecks, operational gaps, and technical friction, and drive necessary improvements.

• Enhance system observability and operability through metrics, logs, traces, alerting, service-level objectives, and incident follow-up.

• Collaborate with Product, Design, Support, Customer Success, Staff Engineers, Engineering Managers, and other engineering teams.

• Shape technical direction through design documents, architecture discussions, code reviews, and effective communication.

• Mentor engineers while fostering inclusive collaboration and continuous improvement.

• Engage in production support and incident response activities.

• Create reusable engineering patterns and enhance developer experiences.

⛳️ Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in building and operating production software.

• Strong foundation in software engineering principles, including data structures, algorithms, testing, debugging, API design, and distributed-systems concepts.

• Extensive experience with a backend programming language such as Go, Python, Rust, or a comparable language.

• Proven experience in designing reliable, observable, secure, and maintainable systems.

• Capability to lead technical projects with unclear requirements, involving multiple stakeholders or cross-team dependencies.

• Sound judgment regarding architecture, technology choices, operational risks, and trade-offs.

• Proficiency in clearly articulating complex technical decisions and aligning both technical and non-technical partners.

• Experience in mentoring engineers and enhancing team practices.

• Strong accountability for production outcomes and their effect on downstream customers.

• Willingness to learn unfamiliar systems and adapt to changing priorities.
