Senior Backend Engineer – AI Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +5 more states.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, and sustain robust, scalable, and high-performance object-oriented backend code.

• Create public REST APIs utilizing Java and internal gRPC APIs.

• Architect and realize next-generation agentic AI platforms.

• Design and construct autonomous AI agents, skills, MCP servers, and AI tools.

• Implement and scale multi-agent architectures for payment and fleet ecosystems.

• Develop system designs, lead design decisions, and ensure alignment with senior engineers.

• Write unit, integration, end-to-end, concurrency, load, and performance tests.

• Analyze systems for bottlenecks and technical debt, executing scalability and stability enhancements.

• Automate testing, monitoring, healing, scaling, continuous integration, and deployment processes.

• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to define and implement features.

• Conduct code reviews, mentor engineers, and advocate for engineering best practices.

• Troubleshoot complex issues, author root cause analyses, and ensure performance and reliability.

• Evaluate competing technologies and provide recommendations on technology solutions.

• Maintain design documents, run books, change management documents, and readiness plans.

• Provide live-site production support, monitor systems, resolve incidents, and drive improvements.

• Lead cross-team projects as a single-threaded owner or technical lead.

• Develop LLM-powered services using technologies such as OpenAI APIs and LangChain.

• Implement AI evaluation frameworks, observability, guardrails, context management, memory, and RAG.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.

• 5–8 years of professional experience in software engineering.

• Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms, object-oriented design, and problem-solving skills.

• Expertise in designing and developing internet-scale services with principles of scalability, availability, security, and reliability.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with a collaborative and empathetic mindset.

• Proficiency in backend development with Java or C#, SpringBoot, RESTful APIs, ODATA framework, and SQL.

• Hands-on experience in building or contributing to AI/LLM-powered applications or agent-based systems.

• Familiarity with agent frameworks, tool-use patterns, and orchestration of LLM workflows.

• Experience in integrating AI systems with external tools/APIs using MCP or similar protocols.

• Understanding of prompt engineering, embeddings, and vector-based retrieval systems.

• Experience in designing systems for scaling AI workloads in production environments.

• Preferred: Master’s degree in computer science or software engineering.

• Preferred: 8+ years of experience in software engineering.

• Preferred: Proficiency in Python, Java, event-driven architecture, and Kafka.

• Preferred: Experience with card payments.

• Preferred: Familiarity with cloud-native architecture, Docker, and Kubernetes.

• Preferred: Knowledge of API security and PCI DSS compliance.

• Ability to work on existing codebases, contribute improvements, and adapt to constraints of legacy systems.

• Nice to have: Skills in AI and production AI solutions.

• Nice to have: Experience with production-grade AI agents or copilots.

• Nice to have: Knowledge of multi-agent systems and distributed AI architectures.

• Nice to have: Familiarity with vector databases such as Pinecone, Weaviate, OpenSearch, or Milvus.
