Regional Reporter

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ohio.

📋 Description

• Establish and take charge of coverage for the Ohio legal community.

• Report on lawyers, law firms, judges, and cases that influence the business and practice of law.

• Focus on mid-size law firms, including their strategies, growth trajectories, and lateral moves.

• Analyze significant cases and litigation trends that are shaping Ohio's legal environment, particularly in civil litigation.

• Monitor key players in the court system, including firms handling major cases and the repercussions of significant court decisions.

• Cover judges and courts, detailing rulings, judicial appointments, caseloads, court administration, and changes in both state and federal courts.

• Report on modifications to rules and policies that impact legal practice.

• Examine the business aspects of law, including firm management, client relationships, and overarching market trends.

• Develop sources, engage in phone outreach, attend hearings and industry events, and create a trusted presence within Ohio's legal ecosystem.

• Define a high-impact coverage area, break significant news stories, and establish yourself as a leading journalist for lawyers and legal figures in the region.

• Collaborate with Law.com's Regional Desk newsroom.

⛳️ Requirements

• A sharp reporter’s instinct for identifying significant stories and emerging trends in the legal sector.

• The confidence and curiosity to build a beat from the ground up, spotting stories before they become apparent.

• Willingness to engage face-to-face, attending hearings, firm events, bar association gatherings, and industry functions.

• Proficient in using the phone to develop sources and maintaining regular communication with attorneys, judges, and court officials.

• Capability to convert complex legal subjects into clear, engaging journalism aimed at a professional audience.

• Strong news judgment, exceptional writing skills, and a commitment to accuracy and fairness in reporting.

• Proactive in generating story ideas independently and pursuing them with vigor.

• Previous experience covering law, courts, business, or other similarly intricate beats is preferred.

• Familiarity with the Ohio legal market is advantageous but not mandatory.

• Proven history of source-driven reporting and producing enterprise stories.

• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced newsroom environment with high expectations.
