📋 Description

• Oversee the U.S. news desk during peak coverage periods, making key decisions on story framing, prioritization, and presentation.

• Differentiate between stories that enhance public understanding and those that merely follow trends.

• Eliminate weak or repetitive stories and insist on improved alternatives.

• Present competitive national stories with clarity, creativity, or analytical depth.

• Revise leads, nut paragraphs, headlines, structure, sources, and tone for improvement.

• Transform raw field notes, transcripts, interviews, and exclusives into polished, analytical journalism.

• Execute quick second-day and ongoing rewrites as facts develop.

• Make calls, verify information, pursue documents, and fill knowledge gaps as a desk reporter.

• Take direct action on high-stakes or sensitive stories when necessary.

• Uphold exceptional newsroom standards and offer constructive criticism.

• Guide reporters and junior editors through mentorship.

• Accept responsibility when coverage does not meet expectations.

• Collaborate with audience teams to align performance objectives with editorial aspirations.

• Keep an eye on competitive coverage and encourage Newsweek to excel.

• 7–10+ years of experience in a leading U.S. digital newsroom.

• Proven track record of editing breaking news, exclusives, and enterprise reporting quickly.

• Outstanding news judgment.

• Excellent rewriting abilities.

• Capable of making significant editorial decisions independently.

• Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive and legally intricate stories.

• In-depth understanding of U.S. political, legal, and cultural dynamics.
