Rail Specialist, Rail Operations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada, +1 more country.

📋 Description

• Act as a rail subject matter expert across various AltaGas locations.

• Offer practical advice on rail operations, switching (shunting), and everyday rail practices.

• Assist in the implementation, maintenance, and ongoing enhancement of rail standards, procedures, and controls within the Operational Management System.

• Review and update rail operating procedures, standards, training materials, and competency assessment tools.

• Provide hands-on assistance for switching, inspections, troubleshooting, competency evaluations, and improvements in infrastructure and practices.

• Engage in incident investigations, operational evaluations, and root cause analyses.

• Identify hazards and contribute to the development of mitigation strategies related to rail movements and loading/offloading operations.

• Deliver technical guidance, training, and mentorship in the field to operational sites.

• Evaluate rail movement operator qualifications through competency assessments, field evaluations, and individual development planning.

• Assist with regulatory inspections, audits, and compliance reviews.

• Deliver rail operational support to AltaGas facilities across North America.

• Monitor, document, and report findings, development needs, and corrective actions from site visits and operator evaluations.

• Report directly to the Rail Operations Team Lead.

⛳️ Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED is required.

• Experience in industrial rail environments, including rail yards, rail-served facilities, and/or Class I railway operations is necessary.

• Background in providing coaching, mentoring, training, and competency assessments within rail operations is essential.

• A valid driver's license is mandatory; travel to operational sites is required.

• Strong practical knowledge of industrial rail operations, including rail yard layouts, rail movements, and switching (shunting) practices.

• Comprehensive understanding of CROR and/or IROR regulations.

• Good knowledge of Class I railway standards and expectations applicable to industrial railway facilities.

• Capability to identify, evaluate, and communicate rail-related risks.

• Proficient in both oral and written communication.

• Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and offer technical guidance and support to less experienced staff.

• A strong safety-oriented mindset is essential.

• Proven dedication to safety, collaboration, and supporting departmental goals across various operational locations.

• Frequent travel to AltaGas operating facilities throughout North America is required.

• Trade certification or post-secondary education in a related field is an asset, though not mandatory.

• Experience as an LPG rail loader/offloader is considered advantageous.

• Experience working across multiple operational sites is a plus.

• Rail-industry technical certifications are viewed as beneficial.

• Current or previous Track Inspection Level 2 certification is regarded as an asset.
