Protection and Controls Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New Mexico.

📋 Description

• Execute electrical engineering design tasks for assigned projects.

• Provide mentorship to fellow electrical engineers within the High Voltage/Power team.

• Collaborate with the Project Engineer and Project Manager to formulate design schedules and budgets.

• Conduct power system studies and coordinate system protection settings.

• Create foundational design documentation for protection settings and relay configurations.

• Assist projects during construction, startup, and commissioning phases.

• Review engineering work completed by colleagues.

• Participate in client meetings.

• Occasionally travel to client and/or project locations for data collection and site assessments.

• Mentor junior engineers and lead internal training sessions as needed.

• Act as the lead engineer on projects of varying sizes.

• Serve as a senior technical resource or advisor for the team.

• Offer specialized technical insights for studies and designs.

• Develop procedures for studies and designs.

• Engage in interdisciplinary reviews of project outputs.

• Prepare construction cost estimates and assess technical effort requirements.

• Complete discipline components of PS&E packages.

• Execute quality-control reviews of design calculations and drawings.

• Draft technical specification sections.

• Contribute to engineering budgets and timelines.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with 6 years of pertinent experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

• 6 years of relevant experience in protection and controls.

• Professional Engineering licensure is preferred.

• 10 years of experience, with at least 2 years in a project lead role preferred.

• Understanding of FERC and NERC regulations.

• Familiarity with IEC61850.

• Proven success working with remote teams.

• Experience managing full EPC and Design/Build projects from inception to completion.

• Field experience with plant startup and commissioning.

• Proficiency in power systems analysis software, including SKM, EasyPower, or ETAP.

• Relay coordination experience using ASPEN OneLiner.

• Capability in developing native relay setting files.

• Experience with distribution automation.

• Familiarity working in collaborative 3D modeling environments such as Navisworks.

• Ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment and communicate effectively with project team members and clients.

• Willingness to travel occasionally to client and/or project sites.
