Project Director – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead a utility-scale battery storage initiative from the Final Investment Decision (FID) phase through construction and commissioning until the Commercial Operation Date (COD).

• Act as the representative for the investor and asset owner, holding overall accountability for ensuring safe delivery within budget, schedule, and established technical and commercial goals.

• Coordinate the technical, commercial, and delivery workstreams leading up to FID.

• Develop the execution strategy, construction timeline, budget, contingency plans, and risk management approach.

• Address requirements related to technical due diligence, planning, land acquisition, and grid connection.

• Assist in preparing investment approval documents by providing delivery-readiness evaluations, identifying risks, and suggesting mitigation strategies.

• Lead procurement processes and contract negotiations.

• Supervise EPC contractors, battery suppliers, balance of plant contractors, technical consultants, and delivery partners.

• Manage the interfaces between battery supply, civil works, electrical infrastructure, grid connections, control systems, and commissioning activities.

• Track contractor performance and project site progress.

• Oversee governance, reporting, forecasting, risk management, and change control processes.

• Manage contractual variations, delays, and claims effectively.

• Cultivate relationships with network operators, regulatory bodies, landowners, and other stakeholders.

• Provide reports to investment teams and senior decision-makers, escalating significant issues as necessary.

• Lead the energisation, commissioning, performance testing, and readiness for commercial operation.

• Ensure that acceptance criteria, performance guarantees, and grid requirements are met and properly documented.

• Coordinate operational readiness in collaboration with asset management, operations and maintenance providers, and route-to-market partners.

• Oversee the preparation of handover documentation, warranties, defects management, and contractual closure.

• Ensure that the final asset is prepared for safe and reliable operation, aligning with investment goals.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in leading utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects through the stages of construction, commissioning, and operational handover.

• Background in advancing energy infrastructure projects toward FID or notice to proceed, including aspects of procurement, delivery planning, and risk evaluation.

• Senior-level responsibility for project budgets, schedules, contracts, and multidisciplinary project teams.

• Solid understanding of BESS technology and the interactions between battery systems, power conversion equipment, balance of plant, grid infrastructure, and control systems.

• Experience managing significant construction and equipment supply contracts, addressing performance obligations, variations, claims, and delays.

• Background in overseeing grid connection, energisation, and commissioning processes.

• Strong commercial judgment and comprehension of how delivery decisions impact asset performance and investment returns.

• Confidence in communicating effectively with investment teams, senior management, contractors, and technical consultants.

• A relevant qualification in engineering, construction, or project management, or equivalent professional experience.

• Experience working for an infrastructure investor, asset owner, developer, or independent power producer.

• Proven track record in delivering projects under EPC and multi-contract frameworks.

• Familiarity with battery warranties, degradation, availability, and performance testing.

• Experience collaborating with lenders’ technical advisors and independent engineers.

• Chartered status or a recognized project management qualification is preferred.
