Professional Fee Coder

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Work remotely to code and validate services provided by physicians and other professionals for VISN 7.

• Analyze documentation for both inpatient and outpatient professional services.

• Identify reportable diagnoses, procedures, services, and provider information.

• Assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes for professional fee encounters.

• Select and sequence evaluation and management codes in accordance with current guidelines and documentation requirements.

• Implement Correct Coding Initiative bundling rules and applicable modifiers.

• Assess whether documentation supports billable services.

• Detect unsupported, duplicate, incomplete, or inaccurately created encounters.

• Abstract necessary data and enter or validate information in CPRS, VistA, approved encoder systems, and authorized VA applications.

• Confirm provider information and scope of practice.

• Re-evaluate coded encounters during pre-bill reviews or after denials; make adjustments or provide coding justification.

• Communicate any documentation deficiencies, coding inquiries, and workflow issues.

• Safeguard VA information by adhering to privacy, information security, encryption, and remote-work protocols.

• Complete orientation, annual training, quality reviews, and corrective education.

• Maintain necessary credentials, access approvals, and professional coding expertise.

⛳️ Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.

• Proficient in English; ability to read, write, speak, and understand the language.

• Minimum of two years of coding experience in the assigned coding area.

• Formal education in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pathology and disease processes, pharmacology, health record content, reimbursement methodologies, and current coding systems.

• Valid RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P credential from AHIMA, or active CPC or CPC-H credential from AAPC.

• Skilled in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS as applicable, CPT, HCPCS Level II, coding guidelines, encoder tools, electronic health records, CPRS, and VistA-related data entry.

• Achieve a minimum coding accuracy of 95% and fulfill assigned turnaround and quality requirements.

• Successfully complete the Low Risk NACI background process along with mandatory VA privacy and information security training.

• Capable of working securely and independently from an approved location within the United States while safeguarding VA information.

• Provide a current resume detailing at least two years of experience in the relevant coding specialty.

• Submit a signed Letter of Intent and a completed candidate cover page.

• Present proof of an active accepted AHIMA or AAPC credential along with supporting education or training documentation.

• Include OIG exclusion search results and any requested background, security, identification, privacy, training, or onboarding documents.
