Principal Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the technical roadmap and create system designs for fellow engineers.

• Write, assess, and enhance code throughout the issuing and processing stack.

• Lead initiatives aimed at boosting reliability, reducing latency, and minimizing costs of core processing engines.

• Collaborate with the Product team to convert requirements into designs related to onboarding, issuing, digital wallets, authorization and clearing, transaction controls, and ledger.

• Provide mentorship to technical leads and sway stakeholders.

• Establish success metrics that elevate the engineering standards across the organization.

• Make decisions regarding data model alterations, consistency assurances, failure and degradation strategies, and blast-radius containment.

• Engage in systems that authorize, clear, and settle transactions in real-time.

• Work alongside engineering leaders to achieve operational excellence.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 12 years of hands-on engineering experience.

• Extensive experience with real-time transactional systems that operate under strict latency constraints.

• Proven experience managing a system with four nines availability or better.

• Strong background in data consistency amidst concurrency, including idempotency, distributed transaction patterns, reconciliation, at-least-once and exactly-once delivery trade-offs, and partial-write recovery.

• Proficient in crafting system designs, defending them during reviews, and operating designed systems in a production environment.

• Experience in developing and scaling systems across various regions, including tested or executed failover mechanisms.

• Background in developing and scaling microservices on contemporary cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS.

• Strong fundamentals in JVM.

• Familiarity with or a willingness to learn Java, Spring Boot, Kubernetes, Terraform, Helm, Kafka, and AWS services.

• A Master's degree in Software Engineering is a desirable asset.

• This role can be performed remotely within the United States, specifically from one of Marqeta’s National locations.
