Principal Software Engineer

📋 Description

• Take ownership and drive technical outcomes across various teams and organizations, achieving significant customer and business impact at scale.

• Establish long-term technical strategies and collaborate with senior Product and Engineering leaders as the technical authority for key company objectives.

• Address unclear and extensive technical and product challenges, influencing what the company develops and the methods used.

• Stay deeply engaged in software development, responsible for owning and implementing critical, complex, and foundational system components.

• Influence and align organizational roadmaps, overcoming structural bottlenecks and transforming how Dropbox operates and develops.

• Design and enhance foundational frontend and backend systems and platforms that support hundreds of millions of users.

• Set and uphold high engineering standards within a distributed, virtual environment.

• Promote AI adoption to boost productivity and generate AI-based features.

• Lead the responsible integration of AI across product capabilities and engineering processes.

• Participate in critical design, prototyping, and code reviews.

• Serve as a trusted technical partner to senior leadership and a company-wide technical strategist.

⛳️ Requirements

• An advanced degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, demonstrating substantial software development experience, or equivalent industry experience showcasing deep technical expertise.

• Over 15 years of experience in designing, building, and evolving large-scale software systems with a lasting impact across multiple teams or organizations.

• Proven success operating at a Principal level, tackling critical technical challenges and guiding long-term technical direction.

• Significant experience in building consumer-facing products at scale, with a solid grasp of user experience, performance, reliability, and operational excellence.

• Extensive technical knowledge across various domains, including frontend, mobile, search, databases, storage systems, concurrency, and distributed systems.

• Practical experience with modern ML, LLM-based APIs, and agentic frameworks in production environments, demonstrating sound judgment regarding quality, cost, and risk.

• Ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly and convincingly to senior engineering, product, and executive audiences.

• Experience in defining and scaling company-wide platforms or architectural standards embraced by multiple organizations.

• A proven track record of successfully introducing new technologies such as AI or ML into core products or engineering workflows with lasting effects.

• Experience in operating within highly distributed, virtual-first engineering organizations on a global scale.
