Principal Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Take ownership and drive technical outcomes across various teams and organizations, delivering significant customer and business impact at scale.

• Establish long-term technical strategies and collaborate with senior Product and Engineering leaders as the technical owner for key company objectives.

• Address ambiguous, far-reaching technical and product challenges, influencing the company’s development processes and methodologies.

• Stay actively involved in software development, taking responsibility for the ownership and implementation of critical, complex foundational system components.

• Influence and synchronize roadmaps across organizations, eliminating structural bottlenecks and transforming how Dropbox builds and operates.

• Design and enhance foundational frontend and backend systems and platforms that facilitate new product capabilities for hundreds of millions of users.

• Establish and maintain high engineering standards across a distributed, virtual environment.

• Propel AI adoption to enhance productivity and develop AI-driven features.

• Serve as a reliable technical partner to senior leadership and act as a company-wide technical strategist.

⛳️ Requirements

• An advanced degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline with significant software development experience, or equivalent industry expertise showcasing profound technical mastery.

• Over 15 years of experience in designing, building, and evolving large-scale software systems with a sustained impact across multiple teams or organizations.

• Proven success operating at a Principal level, managing company-critical technical challenges and shaping long-term technical strategy.

• Extensive experience in building consumer-facing products at scale, coupled with a deep understanding of user experience, performance, reliability, and operational excellence.

• Broad and profound technical knowledge across various domains, including frontend, mobile, search, databases, storage systems, concurrency, and distributed systems.

• Hands-on experience implementing modern machine learning, LLM-based APIs, and agentic frameworks in production systems, with sound judgment regarding quality, cost, and risk.

• Proficiency in articulating complex technical concepts clearly and convincingly to senior engineering, product, and executive audiences.

• Experience in defining and scaling company-wide platforms or architectural standards that are adopted across multiple organizations.

• A proven history of leading the integration of technologies such as AI or ML into core products or engineering workflows.

• Experience in operating within highly distributed, virtual-first engineering organizations at a global scale.
