Principal Generalist Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Africa.

📋 Description

• Design and develop production-level systems that are dependable, scalable, and easily observable.

• Take ownership of systems from start to finish, encompassing problem identification, design, data handling, implementation, deployment, and ongoing operations.

• Collaborate across various application services, distributed systems, infrastructure, data pipelines, and machine learning systems.

• Troubleshoot intricate production issues spanning multiple layers.

• Make engineering decisions based on foundational principles.

• Enhance performance, reduce latency, improve reliability, and optimize cost efficiency.

• Contribute to the overall architecture and technical strategy.

• Create code and documentation that are maintainable.

• Elevate the standards of engineering practices.

• Accurately define problems and decide when to utilize machine learning versus deterministic approaches.

• Manage data throughout the entire process.

• Train, assess, and refine models.

• Develop reproducible data pipelines.

• Deploy models and oversee their performance, drift, and associated costs.

• Diagnose system and model malfunctions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Strong foundation in computer science principles (data structures and algorithms, operating systems, networking, distributed systems).

• Solid understanding of probability and statistics.

• Experience in building large-scale production systems.

• Proficiency in multiple programming languages (Go, Java, Python, Rust, SQL).

• Insight into system behavior under load and during failures.

• Familiarity with Linux, containers, and Kubernetes.

• Excellent debugging abilities.

• Capability to reason through invariants and identify failure modes.

• Knowledge of data systems, streaming systems, machine learning infrastructure, and performance optimization techniques.
