Principal Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +8 more states.

📋 Description

• Establish the technical vision for the domain and strategize for the next 18+ months.

• Develop code, oversee implementation, and take full responsibility for quality and results.

• Create comprehensive, production-ready system designs and assist in their development.

• Lead and engage in architectural decisions regarding scalability, reliability, and security.

• Perform architecture reviews and identify systemic vulnerabilities.

• Implement enhancements that boost organizational efficiency in delivery.

• Recognize shared systems and define reusable patterns to eradicate duplication and inconsistency.

• Lay down technical foundations for other teams.

• Mentor and coach Staff and Senior engineers in technical design, architecture, and systems thinking.

• Conduct cross-team knowledge-sharing sessions.

• Collaborate with engineering leadership on roadmap and resource planning for company-wide initiatives.

• Champion scalability, resilience, security, and performance requirements.

• Align technical strategy with ServiceTitan's business objectives.

• Evaluate candidates for senior technical positions, design interview frameworks, and provide hiring recommendations.

• Assist in defining and maintaining the engineering standards.

⛳️ Requirements

• 15+ years of experience in the industry, specifically with large-scale enterprise web or SaaS applications.

• 7+ years in senior individual contributor roles, focusing on designing and building systems utilized by other engineers at scale.

• Demonstrated success in designing and delivering large-scale distributed systems.

• In-depth knowledge of at least one primary technology stack, such as C#/.NET, Java, C++, or similar.

• Capability to quickly learn and contribute to any technology within ServiceTitan's stack.

• Strong understanding of distributed systems principles, including event-driven architecture, asynchronous programming, concurrency, fault tolerance, and performance optimization.

• Practical experience with cloud infrastructure like Azure, AWS, or GCP, covering architecture, automation, and operational practices.

• Solid foundation in relational, NoSQL, vector databases, and distributed persistence.

• Familiarity with AI/ML systems and LLM-based architectures, encompassing orchestration, retrieval, and agentic patterns.

• Experience in leading monolith-to-microservices or service-oriented migrations to completion.

• Proficient in Git, CI/CD, Docker, RESTful services, and observability tools such as Elasticsearch, DataDog, or Prometheus.

• B.S., M.S., or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
