Outpatient Certified Coder

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Kansas, +6 more states.

📋 Description

• Examine medical record documentation to pinpoint diagnoses and procedures that necessitate code assignment for outpatient records.

• Precisely code diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM conventions for reimbursement, research, and compliance purposes.

• Assess records for specificity in diagnoses and procedures, ensuring appropriate reimbursement for both hospital and professional charges.

• Query physicians when code assignments are ambiguous, unclear, or when documentation is insufficient.

• Stay updated on coding and reimbursement reporting guidelines, and escalate any concerns to the manager.

• Assign ICD-10-CM, modifiers, and HCPCS codes to outpatient records.

• Maintain an ICD-10-CM and/or HCPCS coding accuracy rate of 95% or higher and meet productivity benchmarks.

• Reduce abstracting errors.

• Comply with AHIMA's Standards of Ethical Coding and official coding guidelines.

• Follow Memorial Hermann's policies, procedures, and service standards.

• Support mandatory education, competency requirements, and departmental objectives.

• Act as a preceptor, mentor, and resource for less experienced staff members.

• Create compassionate, personalized, and efficient experiences for both patients and colleagues.

• Carry out other assigned duties.

⛳️ Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED is required.

• RHIT, RHIA, or relevant AHIMA/AAPC coding certification(s) are mandatory.

• Three (3) years of hospital or ambulatory coding experience is required for Surgery/Observation.

• Two (2) years of hospital or ambulatory coding experience is required for Emergency Department coding.

• Two (2) years of hospital or ambulatory coding experience is also required for Interventional Radiology.

• One (1) year of hospital or ambulatory coding experience is preferred for Ancillary/Recurring.

• Experience coding in a level 1 trauma facility or an academic teaching facility is preferred.

• Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.

• Comprehensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM and/or CPT is necessary.

• Analytical skills for interpreting health records and accurately assigning codes are required.

• Proficient understanding of human anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and surgical terminology is important.

• Critical thinking, sound judgment, and decision-making abilities are essential.

• Familiarity with coding compliance policies, official coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal policies and procedures is necessary.

• Proficient in navigating a Windows-based application environment.

• If you reside outside Texas, you must be located in Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, or North Carolina, or be willing to relocate to an eligible state, including Texas.
