OSS Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain internal web applications, APIs, command-line tools, and services for fault management, performance monitoring, configuration tracking, inventory handling, and service-assurance scenarios.

• Manage the engineering lifecycle of internal OSS tools, operational dashboards, workflow automations, and integrations.

• Establish capabilities related to service-provider tenants, cloud services, CPE inventory, topology, dependencies, device reachability, firmware management, alarms, incidents, and customer impact.

• Develop role-based dashboards tailored for executives, NOC personnel, support teams, and service owners.

• Correlate metrics, logs, traces, events, tickets, changes, customer/tenant data, and device telemetry.

• Automate processes for alert enrichment, deduplication, correlation, ticket creation, routing, escalation, notifications, evidence collection, and reporting.

• Integrate cloud APIs, Kubernetes, observability tools, ITSM, collaboration platforms, CI/CD pipelines, databases, messaging, and customer-facing operational systems.

• Provide support for onboarding, provisioning, inventory management, telemetry, command execution, and firmware operations across managed CPE fleets.

• Develop analytics to identify repeat incidents, chronic customers or device groups, change-related failures, capacity trends, knowledge gaps, and automation opportunities.

• Prototype methods for anomaly detection, correlation, and assisted diagnosis while ensuring explainability and human oversight.

• Operate OSS capabilities as production systems with defined availability targets, monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, backup, recovery, and documentation of dependencies.

• Implement security measures such as authentication, RBAC, least privilege access, secrets management, certificate handling, audit logging, secure coding practices, and vulnerability remediation.

• Create runbooks, user documentation, support models, and ownership records; provide training for NOC and support users.

• Offer escalation support for critical tool failures and automation issues.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in OSS engineering, network automation, NOC tooling, software engineering for operations, or a similar field.

• Proven experience in developing OSS capabilities for service providers, broadband operators, managed network providers, or telecom equipment/software vendors.

• Demonstrated expertise with telecom Operations Support Systems—covering fault management, performance monitoring, configuration management, inventory management, topology, service assurance, or network/service orchestration—not limited to open-source software.

• Proficient programming skills in Python, Go, Java, TypeScript/JavaScript, or a similar programming language.

• Experience in delivering maintainable production applications, services, or automation frameworks.

• Background in building APIs, event-driven integrations, data pipelines, databases, and user-facing operational dashboards.

• Practical experience with Linux, containers, Kubernetes, and a public cloud platform.

• Experience in integrating observability, ITSM, collaboration, and operational platforms through REST APIs, webhooks, message queues, or event streams.

• Solid understanding of Git, code review processes, automated testing, CI/CD, release management, and rollback strategies.

• Basic networking knowledge, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, TLS, routing, APIs, and systematic troubleshooting in distributed systems.

• Ability to collaborate directly with NOC, support, and operations engineers to translate ambiguous operational issues into clear requirements.

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

• Willingness to occasionally perform approved maintenance or incident work outside of regular hours.

• Preferred: Experience with cloud-managed CPE, TR-069/CWMP, TR-369/USP, TR-181, ACS/USP controllers, Google Cloud Platform, Terraform, Helm, Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Elasticsearch, Pulsar, Kafka, Jira Service Management, TM Forum Open APIs, YANG, NETCONF, RESTCONF, gNMI, SNMP, workflow engines, RBAC, secrets management, certificate handling, audit logging, data protection controls, front-end development, or UX.
