Oncology Data Specialist – Certified

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Kentucky.

📋 Description

• Compile patient cancer information into the cancer registry database by examining diagnostic and treatment records.

• Classify cancer stages and code cases in accordance with ACoS, SEER, AJCC, and NAACCR guidelines.

• Conduct case ascertainment to ensure a comprehensive cancer registry database.

• Analyze data from the cancer registry concerning cancer incidence, treatment, management, and outcomes.

• Generate precise and timely reports for medical personnel, students, residents, fellows, administration, research, and program development.

• Execute quality assurance, auditing, error correction, pathology audits, and reviews of missed cases.

• Carry out follow-up activities for living patients and confirm causes of death.

• Assist with registry operations, staff training, policy revisions, committees, and educational initiatives.

• Engage in oncology accreditation activities and stay informed about accreditation standards.

• Uphold HIPAA compliance, confidentiality, and organizational standards.

• Perform additional tasks as assigned.


⛳️ Requirements

• Completion of Human Anatomy and Human Physiology (6 total credit hours) or equivalent professional experience (required).

• Minimum of one year experience in a hospital or state cancer registry (required).

• Certification as an Oncology Data Specialist (ODS-C) from the National Cancer Registrars Association (required).

• RHIA or RHIT certification preferred.

• Familiarity with medical terminology.

• Understanding of PHI and/or HIPAA regulations.

• Ability to work independently and accurately gather relevant data.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Capability to interpret extensive instructions and achieve results.

• Proficient in problem-solving, data collection, fact establishment, and valid conclusion drawing.

• Ability to think critically in complex situations.

• Typing speed of at least 60 words per minute.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

• Willingness to learn relevant systems and hospital medical records.

• Knowledge of database management.

• Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and adhering to organizational safety and conduct standards.
