Oncology Data Specialist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Conduct cancer casefinding, accessioning, and abstraction of oncology cases into VHA-approved cancer registry software.

• Complete the entire NAACCR data set, including VA-specific supplemental fields.

• Document and validate coded data using comprehensive text fields that encompass patient history and physical examination, imaging, laboratory and diagnostic procedures, pathology, treatment and surveillance, TNM staging, and prognostic factors.

• Assign AJCC TNM staging for qualifying cases in accordance with current AJCC and SEER guidelines.

• Fill in relevant physician TNM staging fields during case ascertainment or completion.

• Ensure that registry data complies with VACCR, state central cancer registry, and CoC reporting requirements.

• Uphold compliance with NAACCR, SEER, AJCC, Commission on Cancer, NCI, and ICD-O standards and coding guidelines.

• Utilize current and historical coding manuals based on the patient's diagnosis year.

• Maintain patient follow-up information, including vital status, disease status, and related documentation.

• Update follow-up records when patients pass away or when subsequent primary cancers are reported.

• Provide the Contract Manager with lists of finalized cases.

• Submit regular case review reports to the Oncology Data Lead using VA-approved trackers.

• Participate in VISN or facility cancer committee quality reviews upon request.

• Correct identified data discrepancies within 30 days of notification from VACO or facility quality assurance reviews.

⛳️ Requirements

• ODS-C credential in good standing.

• At least 2+ years of ODS-C, cancer registry experience.

• Proven experience in cancer case abstraction, staging, and registry data standards.

• Capability to maintain ODS-C certification through mandatory continuing education credits.

• Ability to complete all VA mandatory training and educational requirements by designated deadlines.

• Uphold strict confidentiality of patient records in line with the Privacy Act of 1974, VA computer access security agreements, and relevant federal and VA information security policies.
