Mining Engineer – Geotechnical

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alaska.

📋 Description

• Assist in the creation and upkeep of site systems and standards for managing geotechnical risks, including procedures, processes, and databases.

• Review development mining instructions and stope designs, providing recommendations for safe extraction requirements.

• Ensure adherence to Company policies and statutory regulations.

• Regularly assess and update Ground Control Management Plans.

• Conduct geotechnical evaluations and risk assessments, offering recommendations to mitigate hazards.

• Gather and analyze geotechnical data concerning potential and actual rockfall incidents.

• Identify, evaluate, and implement opportunities for business improvements.

• Engage consistently with site personnel to ascertain specialist geotechnical needs.

• Offer support, guidance, and professional development opportunities to Graduate Geotechnical Engineers.

• Collaborate with technical and operations teams on short-, medium-, and long-term projects, ensuring geotechnical risks are effectively managed.

• Establish effective communication and networks within the Mining Department.

• Assist with the daily, weekly, and monthly reporting of mine geotechnical parameters.

• Provide and oversee training opportunities through a fair, consistent, and non-discriminatory process.

• Review training requests/applications from employees based on objective evidence.

• Document employee readiness for training and any operational scheduling constraints.

• Maintain training records for departmental employees.

• Monitor the training register and log formal training completed.

• Participate in the evaluation of employee appeals regarding training opportunities.

• Perform additional duties as necessary.

⛳️ Requirements

• A degree in Mining Engineering or a related field.

• Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills across all levels.

• A valid driver’s license.

• Ability to successfully pass a background check and post-offer physical examination.

• At least 2 years of experience in the mining industry, primarily in underground hard rock geotechnical engineering roles.

• Strong analytical skills and practical application of geotechnical knowledge.

• Familiarity with underground mining methods such as longhole open stoping, air leg stoping, and jumbo stoping.

• Foundational experience in numerical modeling.

• Advanced knowledge of Deswik Design Software, Map3D Numerical Modelling Software, Rocscience Software Suite Phase 2 and 3, Dips, Unwedge, and Microsoft Office Suite.

• Strong report writing abilities in a professional context.

• Flexibility to adapt to improved procedures and practices.

• Understanding of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Act and Regulations.

• Willingness to work a 15-day-on, 13-day-off rotating schedule, potentially exceeding 12 hours per day, at a remote campsite.

• Capability to work in extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying noise and light levels, and confined workspaces.

• Employees are required to stay on-site at the company-provided camp during their work rotation.

• Visa sponsorship is not available.
